Early Potty Training

DS is 17 months and we will be staying my parents for 2 weeks for a holiday in Germany in about 2 weeks. We are allowed to travel, where I'm from there is 0 infected and 0 deaths and there have been 0 deaths all along.

I won't have another 2 week holiday this summer and I wanted to potty train in the summer as he will be in their HUGE garden all day and the weather will be good with a pool and all the toys there are - first grandchild and spoilt rotten!!

I know he's young but I wanted to give it a go as he can go nappy free all day and wanted to see if anyone has a book they can recommend - often written by a parent it seems but just a step by step guide sort of thing what do the first 7 days or something like that.

I know some people think it's too young and he may be, it's trial and error and if he doesn't get it, no harm done and the nappies stay on. I just want to give it a go.

I don't want to receive shit from people, just practical advice.

P.s. apparently my brother and husband were dry at 18 months during the day.

Look at the website Go diaper free. Andrea has great advice and does podcasts, blogs and YouTube videos and has a book. Advice is always realistic. Good luck and have a great holiday.

I'm sorry that I can't recommend anything but just wanted to pipe in to say that it is definitely doable!

My friend potty trained her DD when she was 15mo. The DD was really keen to do it so the mum just went along with it. I think she still wears a nappy overnight but otherwise she holds it and goes in her portable potty or the loo, its amazing!!

I'd take advice from your parents as potty training was younger a generation ago and just don't stress. Might be worth asking if they still have a potty as my parents kept my potty which was an old boots 'baby and toddler' potty which is nicer for small bums than pottys I see these days. Enjoy your summer holiday.

DD was trained before she was 2 and it was easy enough. I actually think it can work out great if you do it before they become consciously attached to the sensation of going in their nappy. I also have two DSs who were trained at 2.4 / 2.5 and it could have been done a bit sooner had i been able to put the effort in.

I don’t have a book but my philosophy has always been- once the nappy is off, it’s off. It doesn’t go back on to facilitate a trip to a restaurant or the zoo. It goes on for sleep and that’s it. Offer the potty all the time.

If he isn’t getting it after a few days leave it and revisit 3 months later. Don’t keep stopping and starting.
