Hi I need some advice and any tips.
I am expecting my second baby in the middle of June and I was hoping to toilet train my DD she is 26 months. Am I trying to soon? Would starting when she is nearly 3 be too late? Or am I crazy to attempt it in the summer with a newborn??

She does not like her potty and terrified of the toilet she sometimes roams without a nappy on and will do a wee and come and tell me but has never done a number 2 without a nappy thankfully.

She is aware when she is wet and soiled.

I'm in the same conundrum and due the same time. My son is totally aware when he needs to wee. And he has weed on the toilet and the potty. But he just does not want to go on the potty regularly enough. I've decided to wait. I'm not going to do it with a newborn. I'm hoping one day he will be old enough and I will just say we are doing all our wees on the toilet now and that will be that. I know it's wishful thinking!

I was thinking to just go cold turkey and put her in knickers. I'm on annual leave for 2 weeks from next week so I was just going to go and buy her lots of leggings and knickers and Monday just start the process. Is that mental?

Honestly be led by the child. Regardless of newborn or whatever circs, it will be hard if the child isn’t ready.

Mine were trained literally in 10 mins. One wanted easter sweets when we were in the shop and i don’t know why but i said big girls who wee on the toilet get those sweets. She agreed, took me to m&s loos, duly did a wee and we went and stocked up on mini eggs.

No potty, no pull ups, no changes of clothes. She was about 2.5 at that point.

Leave it closer to 3. It’ll be much easier.

Wait. My two got it straight away when they decided to at nearly three. No accidents or stress. I agree with pp- older children get it quicker

I'd say best to be lead by the child. You may find that actually even if you manage it now you get regression when the newborn is here (quite common).

Read the "oh crap" book. Prep her, that she will not be wearing nappies soon. Wees and poo go in the potty/toilet. Go totally bare bummed for a day or 2, add loose bottoms, don't add knickers for a few weeks.

Ds1 was 2yrs 8 months, I was worried I'd missed the ideal time actually, but he cracked it really quickly using the Oh crap method. I had ds2 who was 1 at the same time.

I think id he inclined to start soon. I'm doing it with ds2 now, he s just 3 and far too opinionated!

I think I will hold off until around October when baby will be 4 months. I will look into the "oh crap" book Thankyou x

I did the no nappy no trousers for a whole week. All it led to was a week trapped in doors and constantly mopping the floor and a distressed toddler. I agree with pp I think when he's ready he will just do it without training. So I think you've made the right choice to wait a bit longer!

neenaj · 22/04/2020 01:21

Do wait. She is too young imo and will be hard on both of you with the training! Have the baby, let the siblings bond, mummy too! And when YOU feel well enough and got into routine maybe start the chat about potty, random potty songs on youtube lol see how she feels then take it from there! Defo wait! Its not worth it and I learnt the hard way with my toddler 😐 and a 3 month old to look after. Someone told me they wont be this age for long and that is true!

xx
