Night Training - what worked for us

We had only ever had a handful of dry nights with our 7 year old. She is a deep sleeper and some nights she was more than filling a pull-up. We were starting to worry about when the hormone would kick in that you read about on this board.

Sadly, it was starting to affect her confidence as all her friends seemed to be out of nappies at night and she was getting very self-conscious about it. I did some research and decided to try a CBT system I found online called 'Therapee'. It's not the cheapest option out there but it had wonderful reviews. It uses an alarm system - a pad under the child's sheet and there is an online progress chart plus fortnightly video tutorials. I know every child is different, but I simply cannot believe how well it has worked for us. The first week was painful (and tiring) with twice nightly wet sheets. The second week she got the hang of it and we only had a couple of accidents. We have now completed our third week and it was accident-free.

The Therapee site suggests that deep sleep, and an inability for the brain to respond to a full bladder is the cause of most bed wetting, not the hormone that we were waiting for. I'm so glad we found this solution and I hope my posting helps others with the same challenges. And no, I am not a representative of the company!

Hi @Willothewhip, I know this post is a bit old but I wanted to thank you for the recommendation. My six year old is now dry at night after I read your post a few months back then tried Therapee. We started in November and she’s been completely dry the last few weeks (was pretty much dry since mid-December). Anyway - thank you, not sure I’d have found it without your recommendation. I mean, that's great, but being dry at night is largely hormonal. It is likely coincidence that your child is now dry. I got exactly the same result by waiting.

@OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea with the greatest of respect, that’s absolute nonsense. But thanks for your input.

Oh CaledonianSleeper that is really wonderful news, especially for your 6 year old. These things become a psychological problem for the child and cause shame and embarrassment if not handled quickly and without fuss. I’m so pleased my post helped you and thanks for taking the time to let me know about it. Maybe others will also give it a go as a result too.

As a brief update, we are now a year on and we have not had an accident in more than 6 months. It’s not even on the radar anymore.
