Help please! Should I carry on potty training?

My 3 year old girl seems ready for potty training, has good bladder control and she tells me when she needs a wee or pooh. I started potty training 2 days ago but she refuses to sit on the potty or toilet. She has been weeing herself instead of doing it in the potty. Today in nursery they told me that they cannot do anything with her because she refuses to sit on the potty. Should I insist and carry on potty training her or should I wait even longer? This is not the first time that I have tried, every time is the same!

Is she scared of falling in? Would you consider holding her over the toilet, then progress to holding her as she sits, then just holding hand.

Or is it the feeling? Could you get one of those padded seats and keep on radiator?

Can she express why she doesn't want to?

She tells me that she doesn't want to sit on the potty and that she prefers to do it on the floor. That's all she says.

She is very active and doesn't like anyone holding her too much so holding her over the toilet bowl is not an option.

She asked to go to the potty as I was writing this but half way there she froze and went NO! She is clearly afraid of sitting there but she won't tell me why...

I tried and failed multiple times with my 3 year old DD and then she cracked it in 2 days once she decided she was ready herself, give her some time and go back to it when you think it's right. For what it's worth, she did it once she moved to pre school and saw everyone else doing it! Good luck x

Have you tried good old bribery? Currently potty-training my DD who's 2.10. They use a wall chart and stickers at nursery which we did at home when we first started. Wees were fine but then she got really scared about doing a number two on the potty and saying she wanted a nappy. We tried a bit of gentle coaxing and encouragement and she would do the odd one but was still generally scared so then we resorted to one chocolate button for a poo (she doesn't have chocolate normally so this was a bit treat!) and is now more or less happy doing them on the potty the whole time (and sometimes even forgets to ask for the chocolate button afterwards! Grin). So it was a case for her of getting used to it and realising there was nothing to be scared about.

Is it that particular potty? Can you ask around to borrow any e.g. from friends who recently potty trained and see if she’d like a different one? My DD is pretty picky. She’s now potty trained, but will go on some loos and not on others, if she doesn’t like the feel of the seat she doesn’t want to go!

I'd leave it for a bit. At this age, she'll see more and more kids her age going to the toilet. Sounds like she just needs it to be her idea, and in a couple of weeks she'll come and tell you she wants to wee on a potty / toilet.

In the meantime, just keep it part of the conversation, but with no pressure for her.
