DD is 2.3, I decided today was the day was all hyped up. Got some pull ups and knickers, whacked off her nappy and waited. Asked her several times to tell me if she needed the loo and I kept asking her too. 10 mins later she wees on the floor. Mopped it up, put some knickers on her and told her again to let me know. Another 10 mins later knickers are soaking....I put the a nappy back on. I guess she’s not ready? 2 accidents in 20 minutes on the first day can’t be right can it??

I found Gina Ford's book useful for potty training.

I think you could have given it a bit longer before giving up, but she's still quite young.

Have you done 'pre-work' and is she showing the readiness signs?

ineedaholidaynow · 18/10/2018 15:50

Has she shown any indication of wanting to go to the toilet before?

Newmums16 · 18/10/2018 15:54

She has told me a few times after she’d done a poo but the main reason I decided to try is because my niece has just been potty trained, we see them quite a bit and DD was so interested in the potty and my niece going potty etc so I though she would be motivated from that.

It isn't just about 'wanting to' it is about recognising the signs and being verbal enough too.
It is 10 years ago now for me, but I remember
a) pre-practicing phase, e.g. sit on potty before bath and lots of praise if anything happened
b) day 1 put on potty every 10 mins, accidents
c) fewer accidents by ~day 3
d) more or less OK after 1 week.
Chocolate buttons helped. One for DD if she did something, but one for me for every accident! Tracking via chart helped to see progress.

Read 'Oh Crap' and ditch the underwear

Signs they are physically ready are long gaps inbetween wees, recognising they need to go, being able to communicate they need to go and being able to hold it in for a short while at least at first to get to the potty/toilet. Otherwise you are probably in for a lot of accidents!

You could try putting her on the toilet every night before bath/bed. When they can wee on demand every (or almost every) time even if only a small amount, that’s another good sign they are ready.

When they are physically ready, you won’t have to keep reminding them to go, asking if they need a wee, watching for ‘signs’ etc, they just know they need to go and can tell you or go themselves!

Hi
Maybe your little one isn't ready yet.
I tried with my little girl when she was 2.5 back in July didn't work at all, was weeing everywhere didn't want to sit on the potty. Just didn't understand. So I put her back in nappies till just this week where I tried again.
1st and 2nd day lots of accidents wee and poo in the pants. 3rd day I let her go commando and watched her like a hawk and when she would wee I whipped her straight on the potty where she finished it off.
I say get a old shower curtain and have potty near by , lay that wherever u are at home with little one just to catch the mess. Since then it's been progress for my little girl. She gets very happy when she's done her business. Only last night she managed her first poo in the potty.
Read the oh crap book it points out some good advice.

I was very stressed and anxious potty training but it's a relief when they pick it up. It's amazing how one minute they can't do it the next it just clicks and they can do it.
Good luck u can both do it!

Bare bottom and persevere.

tenorladybeaker · 19/10/2018 13:00

I think you are expecting a bit much of her on day 1! Does she even know what it's like to do a wee into a potty instead of into a nappy? Does she know how to recognise the feeling of needing a wee? Has she ever eve attempted to use the muscles needed to hold a wee for 30 seconds to get to the potty?

Slow right down. Good advice above about spending a few weeks with potty-sitting practice. Lots of kids don't even show signs of being ready till 3.5 yrs.

She's going to have accidents at first. Naked from the waist down and watch her like a hawk. On the potty as soon as she starts to wee. Lots of praise and chocolate buttons.

You do need to give it a few days rather than half an hour though!

Perso25 · 19/10/2018 13:43

Give her longer! No child that age would get it that quickly so don't worry Smile

I am on day 3 with my similar age son and doing bare bottom, moving to potty as soon as wee starts.

Day 1 hated potty, wouldn't sit on it and seemed to do a wee every 10mins!

Day 3 and he will sit on potty for long periods, holds wees for a couple of hours.

I still have a long way to go but our day 1s sound similar
