Wiping bum after a poo

Hi, I started potty training with my, recently turned, 3 year old daughter on Monday. It's gone pretty well on the whole. The wees, I think I'm fine with, but the poos less so. My DD did a big poo on the potty tonight. I asked her to bend over so I could wipe her bum with toilet roll, but I struggled to clean off all the poo, so I ended up lying her on her changing mat and wiping her bum with baby wipes, just as I did when she was in nappies. I'm thinking that I shouldn't be doing this now. Can I ask for advice on how to get a child's bum clean once they start using the potty? Do you use baby wipes or toilet wipes or just loo roll? Do you wipe your child's bum with them leaning forward, or do you lie them on the floor? Thanks, any advice would really help.

Get her to stand up and then touch her toes. Then wipe with loo roll and then a baby wipe.

Get them to squat is easier but start teaching her to do it herself.

Buy the flushable wipes

I used wipes on the potty. Was easier to use loo roll when he moved to the toilet

Flushable wipes and ask her to touch her toes.

I get them to bend over and touch their toes. Usually toilet paper is just fine, but if the younger one (just-2yo) has made a bit more of a mess/had an accident then I wipe what I can with the loo roll before going over it with a washable wipe (an old flannel would work the same).

I let the younger one have a wipe with a fresh bit of paper once I've cleaned.
Older one (just-4yo) does her own now unless she's really struggling and calls me in. She's getting better but still occasionally finds it difficult to get fully clean despite being toilet trained for over 2 years. We have spent many hours explaining the 'wipe, fold, and wipe' but it's still proving tricky. I'm going to tackle it over the holidays with the 'peanut butter on a plate' method.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm going to try wipes for now as opposed to loo roll. Just a couple of extra questions leading on from this: firstly, when do you know your child is ready to sit on a toilet, is it when they show an interest or do you just sit them on and see how it goes? secondly, someone mentioned teaching my child to wipe their own bum. I was thinking that 3 years old was a bit young, but then again, if other parents manage this, then why not? Does anyone have any advice for teaching a child to wipe their own bum? Thank you.

As long as they can do it before they start school I wouldn't be worrying too much about it. My nearly 3 year old has now decided herself she wants to use the "big toilet" so I have bought her one of those seat insert things and a stool so she can get up herself and not fall in! I still wipe her with wet wipes at the moment.

Flushable wipes shouldn't be flushed as they cause havoc on the sewers. Only toilet paper down the toilet. Use wipes but dispose in a bin.

BayLeaves · 17/07/2018 22:33

The “flushable” wipes shouldn’t really be flushed.

I often dampen a bit of loo roll and use that if it’s too messy to rely on dry loo roll!

I taught mine to wipe themselves from the start. I did give help if it was needed but as they both went to nursery not long after potty training I thought it better. I used to say "pat, pat" for the front and then "wipe, wipe" for the back so they knew which order to do it in.

As others have said have her bend over and wipe. Get her to have a go first to get into the habit and then you finish the job, my older two were both 5 before they were able to a good job without any help.

Thank you all for your great advice. Will definitely start to encouraging her to wipe her own bum after a poo from now on!
