Is it normal to still be having lots of accidents at the end of day 1?

DS is 3. Started this morning, bare bum. Almost half of wees have been successfully in the potty since about mid-morning, a couple have been total fails and the rest are kind of half and halfs - he starts to wee, then stops when we say to wee in the potty and not on the floor, and goes and finishes in the potty. He gets where to go and what to do, and if we see him jiggling we tell him to go, but he will flat out deny he need to go then start peeing on the floor a minute later. I have no idea if this is normal or not, or if we're doing something wrong??

Sounds normal.
You're at the very start of the process, some children pick it up very quickly, others don't, normal covers a lot!

Day 1?! That's amazing progress! I should think that's completely normal, you're doing everything right Smile

muggymum · 12/08/2017 17:23

Day 1!! Of course it's normal. This is going to be a long week for you

Roomba · 12/08/2017 17:25

Very, very normal! It took DS1 about a week to finally get it, and even after that he would have an accident a couple of times a week for months. DS2 took me about a year to bloomin' train, he was perfectly 'ready' tbh he just didn't want to! I had to say well they won't let you start school if you are still in nappies, then he was miraculously dry within about 24 hours Grin.

Ok - thanks! I think this is the most stressed I have been about any aspect of parenting since he was about three weeks old. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and am worried I'm screwing everything up!

It's normal, otherwise it wouldn't be 'day 1' of potty training, if it was that simple it would just be 'the day' of potty training

Half of the wees in the potty is great, just keep being really positive, lots of praise and little rewards and I'm sure you will crack it in no time

Potty training is hideous. Day 1 with DD every wee went on the floor. Day 2 on the morning she refused to go near the potty or toilet, and I told DH to pick up wine on the way home from work. But by Day 3 more wee was going in the potty than not, and just over a week later she's fairly reliable at using the potty when told and telling us when she needs. Chocolate buttons helped. So did the wine.

Well we've made it to bedtime! He's now asleep in a pull-up and there have been no accidents at all since 5, all wees in potty though he did spend a good half hour in the bath to which I'm turning a blind eye. I'm knackered- need to regroup for day 2. Regretting doing this with a five week old baby!

Oh OP! With a 5 week old? You poor thing!

Did you have a thread before about potty training, were your family or someone else pressuring you to get it done? Your name rings a bell. Congratulations on the baby Flowers fwiw I tried DD at 2.10 when DS was about 8 weeks and it was a disaster, so we sacked it off for 3 months, but it sounds like you're going rather better.

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 12/08/2017 20:14

I did yes - had a go doing it at 36 weeks pregnant. Did not end well! My mother has been driving me batty about it since he turned 2, and was getting borderline hysterical as he approached 3. I was going to leave it for a while but he's suddenly shown an interest the last week, and nursery said they thought he was ready. So I read the Oh crap! book someone recommended on my last thread and am going for it. Luckily DS2 is a remarkably chilled baby, and I'm also aware that could change so want to try while the going is good-ish. The constant vigilance is utterly knackering though!

Potty training is hands down the hardest challenge I've had with dd (ds is shaping up to be another matter!). It took the best part of 9 months for her to be reliably dry all the time - and she was over 3 when we started! Still has accidents occasionally, but these are indicative of UTIs which she struggles with.

To have half the wees in the potty on day one is fantastic! I don't actually think it is normal, I think it's better than normal! Carry on, you're doing great.

OuchBollocks · 12/08/2017 20:21

It is knackering and hard bloody work. You're doing amazingly. Glad the baby is treating you well. My mum had insisted DD must be toilet trained by June. She wasn't until August. Perhaps that's why the USA and North Korea are having the nuclear argument, cos DD was in nappies for 10 weeks too long Grin

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 13/08/2017 15:31

Day 2 - we've had two accidents, both after introducing shorts and when DH wasn't watching him properly. We're persevering though and everything else has been perfect - I just don't know how he makes the leap from us telling him to go to asking to go himself. Should it just happen?

Butterymuffin · 13/08/2017 15:37

It's unlikely to happen on Day 2. Honestly, don't stress about it after two days! Give it time. And tell your mother to butt out Wink

OuchBollocks · 13/08/2017 15:45

DD asked to go on day ?5 I think, maybe day 6.

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 13/08/2017 18:33

Ah brilliant- good to know it could be a while!

How has today been OP?

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 14/08/2017 19:31

No accidents! Thanks for enquiring Grin. Still needs prompting and doesn't seem to want to poo - went in the bath last night 😱 and nothing today so am awaiting that with trepidation - but overall cautiously optimistic. He's back in nursery tomorrow so I hope that doesn't bugger everything up. DS2 has started teething though (at 5 weeks old!!) and DH had an endoscopy today so things are a little fraught but I'm hoping the worst of potty training is done with. Not sure if I'm being overly optimistic though!
