We've been potty training for... some time... my daughter thinks it's a hoot. She loves sitting on the loo, wiping, flushing - but doesn't understand the part where she has to actually wee!

She will wee in the potty, if she sits on it for a long period while playing or watching tv, but it's a coincidence.

She gets a chocolate button when she's done anything in the potty. We tried a sticker chart too. We've read various potty books with her - and she loves them. We've put pants on her, and tried the 'pants in the nappy' tricky, but she doesn't mind being wet.

How on earth do I help her to understand/care that she can't just wee on the floor? Hmm Grin

She is non-verbal and likely ASD to throw that into the mix, but very bright and understands what she is told. She knows the makaton sign for toilet.

How old is she? It sounds like she is not really ready. I would be tempted to put her back in pull ups or nappies for a few months then try again.

She's only just 3. Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you tbh. It's just that she occasionally removes her nappy in bed before a wee, which makes me wonder whether it's a focus/concentration thing. She also loves 'using' the loo.
So tricky!!! I guess I just wait a while longer

Yeah it is tricky I started my DD at 2.5 because she had so many signs of being ready but it took ages. I would keep letting her use the potty/toilet as often as she wants to but maybe in pull ups to save on the cleaning!

We had similar with DD last Xmas (almost 2) loved the potty, loved treats when she managed a wee there etc but nothing came of it in the end.
We are trying again this week with all be it more success, I think maybe we are just reading her 'need a wee' signs better. She has very few words and other than mamma, pappa not much else can be understood out of context. Although I've taught her a potty sign she doesn't really use it to ask for the potty and tends to just go there instead if she remembers in time. Unfortunately I don't think this can work in nursery where they can't always just take themselves to the bathroom so expect she will be back in nappies by the end of next week when she goes back in.
