Inconsolable toddler

My ds is 2.5 and a couple of days ago asked to use the potty and did a pee and a poo. Decided to give potty training a try and it was going fairly well. Except tonight after I put him in his nappy for bed (no way he's ready for overnight training!) he did a tiny wee in his nappy and was inconsolable. Kept asking to use the toilet so I let him and he didn't do anything. He seems terrified of going in his nappy and keeps crying and saying "no pee in nappy, I'm a big boy". I'm so worried he's getting so upset about it- we've made no issues when he's had an accident and told him it's ok to pee in his nappy at night but he just keeps crying and saying it's not ok! My heart is breaking for him and I don't know what to do. He's nowhere near ready not to wear a nappy at night but he's getting so upset. He wants to sit on the toilet all the time in case he has an accident! Please help!

Oh poor little guy. I have no words of wisdom except maybe try to explain to
Him that lots of children use a nappy at night. Does he have any slightly older cousins or friends you could point to as examples? And tell him big boys wear a nappy because that way they don't have to wake up to wee?

I have no experience as I have yet to start this battle. Can you get him some training type pants rather than nappies so he feels more grown up?

Could you use pull ups if you aren't already? I know they're a bit pricier but if he sees they go up and down he can do his last wee before bed (i know you aren't overnight training him but I don't agree with waking kids up to wee after they've gone to sleep 😂) and just explain that the pull up (not nappy) is just incase he doesn't wake up in time - but you're extremely proud of how grown up he's being? Good luck x

Poor boy.

Mind you, DS1 was exactly the same. His little friend announced that she was wearing pants because she was a "big girl", so DS1 went home, took his nappy off and refused to put it back on. Even at night.

To he fair, he had a few accidents in the daytime, but never at night, which was weird, as he had been waking up with a sopping nappy. He was 2.5 years as well.

I would be tempted to buy some " special night time pull ups" tomorrow, as a treat, and tell him he can use the potty in the night if he prefers to pull them down.

As said above I use pull ups at night time because I worried it would be a bit confusing putting a nappy back on I made sure to buy pull up that looked as far removed from nappies as u could (i.e. not white) and call them her night time pants. I haven't had the issue you're having so this may not be of any help but maybe worth a try?

Would he fit into age 3 - 5 Dry Nites? They're blue with Spiderman on.
