5 year old still wet at night? Advice?

My 5 year old DS started school in September. He's been potty trained since the age of 3 but he's still in pull-ups at night and if he doesn't wear one he just wets the bed. My 3 year old DD has been trained since she was 2 and she has been dry both day and night ever since. How can I get my DS to be dry at night? I've tried limiting his drinks after a certain time before bed, and I've tried waking him for a wee too and still no luck. I praise him on the times when he does wake up dry. Can this be normal at his age?

Ah, not as negative as I thought

My DD was the same. I got my knickers in a right twist about it, ended up at clinics etc. It was so stressful one day I just said, you know what we aren't doing this anymore we are both getting stressed and tired. So I put her back in pull ups, literally 2-3 weeks later it just stopped! We had the occasional accident but she was fine. Don't stress about it, it'll come when he's ready!

I think we're really in a fortunate position nowadays, with the availability of pyjama pants and pull-ups, although they are quite expensive. My mum had a total nightmare in the seventies with my sister wetting the bed until she was 8 - bed stripped every night, no tumble dryer. So the desperation to have your child dry back then must have been strong.

My eldest stopped wetting at night when he had just turned 7. I stressed about it from time to time, tried him without pull-ups and so on, to no avail. Then I thought, sod this for a game of soldiers, kept putting him in night pants, counted my lucky stars that leakage was minimal - and waited. He just started to be dry when he was ready. Now I have a nearly 5 year old in the same position and I'm just going with the flow .... pun intended!

This is going against the grain but DD is nearly 5 and in pull-ups and I've actually been wondering if putting her in them is encouraging her to wet herself. Like sometimes she puts them on and we have a story or watch the bedtime story on CBeebies, and while we're sitting there she'll wet herself. Doesn't even mention it. Which makes me wonder if maybe subconsciously she thinks that if she's in them she can wee? Would love to hear if anyone else had that and so managed to train them out of it.

My DS was dry in the daytime at 3 after about a week of potty training with no daytime accidents but wasn't dry at night until he was 7. He's always been a solid sleeper and simply couldn't wake up when he needed a wee until he was physically mature enough to do so.
Taking him to the toilet in the night had no useful effect so we eventually stopped doing it.
I think you just need to stay positive and be patient.
