DS potty trained in the day before he was 2 years old and is very confident toileting in the day

I left him in nappies at night because I didn't fancy getting up multiple times at night to help him flush and wash hands etc

He's now just turned 3. Someone said they were suprised he still needed nappies at night the other week so I bought the bed mats and we decided to try.

First week was good, only one wet night

This week I think he's weed every night and multiple times. I was up 8-9 times last night. He hasn't soiled himself at all (previously did 2 a night in nappies sometimes, I think he saved them for his nappy) he's only wet himself

Should he be dry at night at just 3? Or am I trying this too early?

I stop him drinking an hour before bedtime, and take him to the loo before he goes to bed as well as if he wakes in the night...

Boys take much longer at night on average. I think it's 7 before they will consider it a problem, and 5 or 6 for girls. Night dryness is due to production of a hormone, it's not something you can train, you just have to wait until the nappy is consistently dry in the mornings. Apparently restricting drinks and waking them up doesn't make a difference so I wouldn't worry about doing that either.

Really? Shock

I had no idea. Perhaps I should have done some reading up before trying this.

Though the fact he can manage not to poop if without a nappy makes me wonder if he's just been lazy... Or is it just the urine that's the hormone thing??

DS was 6. I was worried that he was late so did what you did and tried him without pullups for a few nights which was a total disaster. Then a few months later all of a sudden the pullups were dry in the morning. I don't think it's something you can force, or train them to do. It happens when it happens. MIL wanted me to lift him half asleep and put him on the loo, but I resisted and Im glad I did now.

Don't stress!

My youngest DD was dry during the day just before her 2nd birthday but still in nappies at night aged 5.2.

I'm not overly concerned at the moment. I think for her it is a combination of being a deep sleeper and having to go downstairs to use the toilet so if she does wake she doesn't want to.

If she is still in nappies at 7 I will take her to the doctor.

Hmm this is all quite a shock, I think I might be off to buy some more nappies today and get some less disturbed sleep tonight!

Are there any Eco options for larger bottoms? I did cloth nappy as a baby but he was being changed so regularly whereas his poor bum may be raw if he had a wet cloth one on through the night and I want to minimise my own contribution to landfill if possible...

Doctors rarely do anything until your child is 7, before then it's still in the range of "Normal" at night.

BertieBotts · 07/10/2015 15:53

Hmm I'm not sure about poos, DS never did them in his sleep even when he was a baby.

Nature care baby nappies are mostly biodegradable, they do pull ups up to size 6
