DS needs the potty at 4.30am...

DS is 2.5 and has been out of nappies for a couple of weeks now. He has always been an early riser but now he's waking up every morning, bang on 4.30, asking for the potty. He always has a massive wee, and then a poo.

He's still in nappies at night but they've been dry for nearly a week, so I'm picking up a spare duvet set and mattress cover and plan to take off the night time nappy, too. But I can't see that will help with the 4.30am wake up call! He never goes back to sleep afterwards and we're now both exhausted.

Any advice? Can I reprogramme him somehow? Grin

For what it's worth, i don't see the harm in trying the lifting idea.

But at the same time "Lets have a cuddle first" and extending the time he holds isn't going to do any harm either.

Art Awesome, good to know that the Not an issue tbh. comment was founded in many years of non-experience. The fact that it is an issue is the problem or the OP wouldn't have posted.

The issue is that he won't go back off after peeing. The op either needs to extend the time he holds in his sleep, lift him before he wakes up or come up with a solution that will get him to go back to sleep.
It's not rocket science but it is an issue, one that shouldn't be dismissed.

Well yes, if you read the thread you will see I suggested ways op might be able to get child back to sleep.

Stopping a child going to the toilet will just lead to them weeing in bed or a bladder infection

Lift him when you go to bed.

Increasing the time before he wees sounds like it could get messy, do lifting first and use that if lifting doesn't work.

Hi all,

Thanks for all of the replies. I had no idea this thread could get so emotive! Sorry I've not been back, my MIL had a heart attack so we've been away to see her.

Lifiting sounds like it might be the way forward. I'm a bit scared though! I can just imagine him waking him up and then not being able to get him back to sleep. I think I'll give it a go this weekend when DH and I are both around in the day to catch up with sleep if we need to!

Thanks again.
