How to know when to go nappy free at night?

DS is 4.4 and has been dry during the day since around 2.6 with the occasional accident. At night he wears drynites. He wants to wear pants. We've started putting him in pants and trying to train him and take him to the toilet before we go to bed. We've also put a potty in his room. We've only had one dry night in a week. It's making me wonder if we're trying to do this too early for him. Is this something that naturally happens when they're ready? Or is it something that you can help train them to do?
Thanks!

I think the former - they're just ready for it at some point and there's nothing much you can do before then. In my case, DC1 was 6, DC2 was 2 and DC3 was 4!

That's what I'm leaning towards to be honest. Dh thinks he's just peeling in the nappy at night as he finds it easier but I'm thinking that it's just that he's not ready yet. I've spoken to DS tonight to say that ok I will let him try again tonight but that if it doesn't work we'll go back to nappies for a bit then try again in a few weeks. I've said that it's not a problem and not his fault and just means that he's not quite ready yet. I think that's the way forward here but am good at questioning myself lots with things like this.
Thanks!

Very few children will actually do this as they have a natural tendency to please and they want to be like those around them.
You DH as obviously never tried to dilibratly pee in a nappy, there is a psychological block which means it's not as easy as just going becuase of laziness.

Well he amazed me last night by staying dry! He went to the loo when we went to bed and again at about 4 am when he woke me to take him to the loo (the joys of a downstairs toilet!). Will see how tonight goes but will keep in mind that he might not be ready or might be ready and we'll just have to see...
