Hi,
I'm hoping someone else has been through this! DD2 (just turned 3 at Easter) has had a 'thing' about poo since last summer when she did a poo in the bath, totally freaked out and refused to have a bath for the next 2 months. After that incident we always worried that potty training would not go smoothly....
Anyway, for the past 11 days she has been weeing fine on the potty, telling us when she needs to go and even having a go at pulling her clothes down and sitting there by herself. All good. But she was holding poo in, only going every 3 or 4 days as opposed to once a day or more when she was in nappies. She did 2 poos in the potty and the most recent one in her pants.
However this has now progressed to holding wee in too because she is worrying that a poo is going to come at the same time if she sits down for a wee. She got herself hysterical at bathtime last night, then DD1 started crying too seeing DD2 so upset. Then today I had to pick her up from pre-school early because she needed a wee but was tying herself in knots and refusing to go to the toilet. It took until 3pm for her to do a wee, and she did a poo too, but I had to put a nappy on her for this to happen.
So she's back in nappies :-( I didn't really want to, but what else can I do if she won't even wee and is getting hysterical? She is upset with herself I think, she has told me she wants to wear pants but I have said to her that she will have to wait until she feels brave enough to poo in the potty.
So we have a bit of 'thinking time' now - how do we help her out of this? I think it's looking at the poo that is the problem, I tried putting a nappy in the potty and telling her I'd take it straight away, I tried sitting with a wipe at the ready and telling her I'd put the wipe over the poo so she didn't have to look at it. I don't know what else to do?
DH thinks she needs a child psychologist
But maybe he has a point?
We have two books, 'Liam goes poo in the toilet' and 'Everybody Poos'. Are there any other ones that worked for your children?
Thanks for reading! DS and DD1 were really straightforward in terms of potty training so I've no experience of anything like this!
