Pooing in night nappy

DS2(age 6) is still not dry at night and is showing no signs of it so is still in night nappies. Last weekend when I took his nappy of I was shocked to find that he had soiled it(not diarrhoea). I asked him about it and he pretended he didn't know he had done it. I put this down to a one off, however this morning its the same. He came into my bedroom, his nappy looked wet normal, but he had also pooed in it. During the day he has no problems so am not sure what is causing this. Can anyone help?

It's normal for children to still want a nappy to poo in until they're 4 or 5, so don't worry it's not completely uncommon, they tend to grow out of it in their own time. My SN 7 year old still chooses whether to use a nappy or the toilet.

I do realize your DS's problem is slightly different, as it's something that has restarted, rather than something that has always been there. Have you asked him about it, is he worried about getting out of bed, is it a fear of falling into the toilet?

When I ask him about it he just denies knowing that it happened saying it was just an accident. Daytime training has always been fine, has never had a phobia of the toilet. I have a feeling he is just being lazy. On the weekends he gets up and pays for a bit while still wearing his nappy, maybe he is using it because its more convenient.

Could it be constipation, soft stuff is leaking out but the hard stuff is stuck in the bowel??

Are you okay with changing him?
If so i'd just let him do it, its clean and contained. much easier than putting up with pooey fingerprints becuase he's put his finger through the paper trying to wipe.

Can he take the nappy off easily enough to poo? Tbh I can see why he just poos in it if he's wearing it anyway. I mean in 6yr old logic "why not?"

museumum · 28/03/2015 16:08

What did he do before if he needed to poo in the night?

Nymeria01 · 28/03/2015 16:26

I don't think its constipation because its not watery.
Changing him is a bit of a pain but I can deal with it. My main concern is that at 6 he should not be doing this, he is only in nappies because he is not dry at night.

He never really has to go when he has his nappy on. He can take the nappy off fine. Before on weekends, when he is up before me, he would just take it off and leave it on the floor if he had to poo, its not ideal but it was better than him filling his nappy then waiting around in it.

I'd be thankful that he's keeping the nappy on, pooing then taking his nappy off is a lot worse.

He's 6, he won't be doing this at 10.

Ds1 did this.It was happening when he got up in the morning and didn't take off his pullup straight away, so probably laziness/child logic.

I went zero tolerance for pullups once up for the day (ie up, bathroom, pullup off, wee, PJs back on) and it stopped.

It's happened again, twice. I'm sure its laziness, we are on half term so not getting up so early, both yesterday and today he pooed his nappy. I had a proper chat with him this morning, after changing him, saying that in the morning he is to take the nappy off and use the toilet or if if he cant (he can take it off) come in and ask me. I'm considering getting him pull ups so he has no excuse for not taking them off.
