Dealing with distractions

Hi Ladies. I'd appreciate your ideas, suggestions and past experiences for children who seem too distracted to go to the toilet.

I am convinced that my DS knows when he needs to go as when he isn't busy doing something, he tells me (even when out in the car). However, a lot of the time he is too busy making a mess, watching/playing with Thomas and Friends or doing some other exciting activity.

Often when it's been a while since he last went, I ask him if he needs to go and like for 95% of my questions, he says "No", only for a couple of minutes later to say "Oh dear!" when the first few drops come through into his pants. He then holds off a little bit whilst we get to the potty.

It's really annoying because a week or so ago we didn't have this problem.

Any suggestions on how best to deal with this?

How old is he, if he is under 3 distractions are going to be a problem until he learns how long he's able to fully hold for.

Maybe instead of asking if he needs to go, change your wording and tell him to try and wee.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Private Eye. Oh yes, he's in his terrible twos alright! (And don't I know it!!)

I've tried asking/convincing him in different ways. Nothing doing. I think he's got a real thing about doing it "solo" and managing the timing for himself, except that he seems to leave it too late. :-(

He's got a real stubborn head on this shoulders.

Sorry, I mean PirateJones! Sorry, my head is still spinning with problems at work (so hard to "shut down" this part of my brain after work). I sometimes wonder where my head would be if I didn't have it screwed on! :-(
