How do you get a child to SIT on the potty?

My son is 18 months, and for the last three months he has been telling us when he needs a poo/wee and when he has done one. He even gets the change mat, and nappy bag and putsit on the floor in front of the fire and lies on the mat.
He is dry for 2-3 hour periods in the day and happy to run round in the nuddy.
He knows to sit on the potty but just won't anymore (even for reading, sweets, stickers) if he does sit or is put on it he jumps up immediately and laughs. It's not cold because it's next to hearth.
He's advanced with language, saying over 80 words and understands even more but has been getting quite frustrated lately with a lot of things. I just wasn't doing something right.

I used a timer and rewarded DD with a sticker for sitting on the potty for 1 minute. Otherwise she would say she needed a wee and sit on the potty but immediately get off again and then wee on the floor 20 seconds later.

i ddon't have a garden :( I have a concrete yard that's not safe thanks to a subsiding 7 foot garden wall that the landlord is refusing to fix so that's bot really an option.

I want to move but can't this year as I'm due to have an operation in summer. I wanted to het the hard work sorted now then my partner and family just have to "practice" with the potty rather than them having to train him while I'm off my feet.
With my operation if we don't get something sorted in the next 6 months he's going to be in nappies for over a year until I'm ready to give it another go :(

I think you just have to persist. my ds was also very advanced and was potty trained at 14 months. he did go through a phase of not sitting on the potty and instead weeing in the corner. i found out it was because he had been to his nannas with his dad and instead of taking him outside to where his dad had put the potty he let ds wee in the mop bucket! I was so annoyed but ds eventually clicked he had to sit on the potty again.

also I found getting my dbro to sit on it aswell really helped as ds was obsessed with him so maybe an older relative could help?

Possibly I could get his dad to sit on the potty then, he worships his dad and is desperate to do anything he does! Thanks xx

Maybe just try straight to the toilet. I found it hard training ds until I skipped the potty all together and went to the toilet and used one of those children's toilet seats that clips onto a regular toilet seat

I put the potty in the sitting room, in view of the TV. He was happy to sit on there while occupied. For the toilet seat, a couple of videos on my phone while I perched on the edge of the bath encouraging him (and making sure the phone didn't meet a sad demise).

I have tried many methods but there is nothing sure what will work for my child. I have listened about many training for this but not sure which one will be effective. Somewhere I got this training program info. Have anyone idea, Is this legit or effective?

I tried getting 24mo DD to sit on her potty last night - lots of enthusiasm but then kept jumping up and running around. She's got a little toy potty so put that on the floor in front of her then plonked her fave toy cat on it. She was then quite happy to sit still for quite a long time and did a big wee.

Then I took my eye off the ball for a sec and turned around to find Macca Pacca had been dropped in the potty...

None of my children liked a potty, toilet worked best

debbriana · 27/02/2015 23:51

My 15 month old uses her potty at the moment like a chair. Sometimes when she wants to poo I mention it and sit her on it without taking the nappy down or cloths. She is starting to clock what it might be. Hopefully, when the time comes she will be able to use it.

Yep in front of tv then do cartwheels etc when they do the business :-)
