Is my son ready to be dry at night?

My son is almost 3 and has been potty trained for a few months, we have a few accidents here and there during the day but his nappy is never dry in the morning so I wasn't going to start trying without a nappy at night quite yet. However the last few nights he has woken up several times in the night, about 11pm and 2am, to use the toilet on his own but his nappy is still wet when he wakes at 6.30am. When he does wake in the night he is very distressed and cries until he is back in bed! Is he ready and how can I best help him?

He's not ready. Wait until he has dry nappies in the morning for a few weeks - or you are setting him up to fail. It took DS well over a year from being dry in the day to being dry at night. He would have the odd night then it became more regular that he was dry in the morning. We waited until he'd been dry for 3 weeks in a row and then we took him out of nappies at night. He has the occasional accident but is still in cot-bed with waterproof mattress so it's easy to sort out. When we go away we take a waterproof sheet.

Sorry I didn't answer the second bit. Help him by ensuring he doesn't have too much to drink too close to bedtime. Take him to the toilet/potty in the night (keep potty in bedroom close to bed). Reassure him so that he knows you aren't cross or upset that his nappy is wet, even if he is. He will cry because he's tired and it's the middle of the night, I feel a bit like that myself at times.

BTW my ds is just 4 now. He started to be dry at night at about 3.6 - but they're all different. it will happen when he's ready.

Thanks for your help, I did think it was a bit quick Smile

You can't rush night-time dryness. It all hangs on a hormone that gets secreted that halts the production of urine at night.

The fact that he is waking is good, you probably aren't far off. But wet nappies indicate that it isn't quite yet!

Help him by ensuring he doesn't have too much to drink too close to bedtime. This may sound obvious, but it isn't the best thing to do. Carry on as normal to increase the capacity of his bladder!

Iv given him his milk an hour before bed tonight, which is a bit earlier than normal, however not much. Thanks again for the advice, feeling better about the whole thing now. Will have to wait and see what happens tonight.
