Poo regression in a 5-year-old....

Has anyone had anything like this happen? My five and three-quarter year old DS has been toilet trained for 2.5 years and although he still has moderately regular wee leaks (i.e. usually just damp pants, sometimes more) due to not bothering to go, he has never had poo accidents - not even when first potty training.

However this summer holidays everything has changed. He went on a day out with DH and got lost in a maze and had a poo accident - rotten we thought but probably because he was desperate and couldn't get out to the loo. But since then it has been a regular once-or-twice-a-week occurrence! Not whole poos in his pants but significant smears usually. I have tried being understanding and I have tried being cross. I have banned standing up wees on the grounds that if he sits on the loo he can try and poo at the same time and hopefully nip any accidents in the bud, but this morning he did a poo on the toilet and then quarter of an hour later did some more in his pants!

I'm running out of ideas - help please!!

I have a similar issue with my almost 4 y.o. Frequent regression without any obvious cause, upset etc. He was trained at 30 months with ease, regressed 4 months later and has been on and off since. We did have a big move during that time but he frequently does these little "nuggets" which end up causing a big mess. He literally doesn't seem to care. It's frustrating as I know he can do it and these regressions don't seem to coincide with anything.
