I am not sure if we should just go for it and persevere with wet bed for a few weeks to see if he learns to wake to wee. Or hold on better. Or is there just no point trying if he is wet every morning?

5 is still too young to start worrying about night wetting.
If the nappy is consistently wet every morning, I'd forget about it for now.

Night wetting is down to a hormone, not necessarily down to learning.

If he sleeps for 12 hours I think its unrealistic yo expect him to be dry all night. We started lifting ds at about our bedtime and after a while he started waking himself up.

Night time dryness is hormonal though.

My ds is nearly six and still wet at night. We tried lifting him, which worked, but now he is getting heavier, I can't do it anymore.

I don't think just taking the nappies off will work. You'll just end up with wet beds, and that's more work for you and disturbs his sleep.

It's very different to being dry during the day. My ds has been out of daytime nappies since he was two.

you cannot force it ime. Sometimes you can help motivate with promises of chocolate buttons, but basically their bodies can or can't do it. 5yo is not that old.

I think it depends on whether or not the wee is happening in his sleep or not. We've just taken our 6 year old out of night nappies as we realised his nappies were wet because he was doing a wee first thing in the morning in his nappy (i.e. when he woke up and could have gone to the toilet but was too lazy!) and not from weeing in his sleep.
Now he's not wearing the nappy, he gets up and goes to the bathroom instead. We have had maybe 2 accidents in 2 weeks so not too bad!

Thanks very much for reaponses. I think the biggest wee he does is at about 10pm. We have tried reducing drinks after 5pm but it doesnt seem to help. Will maybe leave it for a bit then.

I didn't literally lift ds - I would get him up, on the potty in his room and he'd go back to sleep quickly.
