How do I know when he's ready?

DS is 2.4 and is very good with verbal communication. I've introduced him to the potty and talked him through it. He sits on it and will do a wee and is pleased with the praise but doesn't seem to pay any attention to the sensation of needing a wee. If he's stood starkers he will just wee and point at the floor "oh look mummy, a wee!".

Is this him not being ready? Will he learn to recongnise the sensation or is it something that I will need to teach?

Does he tell you when his nappy is wet/dirty? The sensation of I've just done a wee tends to come before I'm about to do a wee.

Rarely. He will happily play in a soiled nappy if he's engrossed in his toys!

I agree, telling you've they done a wee/poo is a good starting point which should turn into "I need a wee/poo."

I'd also look for nappies being drier for longer periods during the day.

Mine was overnight. Woke one morning, told me he wanted pants and away he went. Total potty/toilet refuser before that! Hmm Confused

My daughter is similar, although younger (23m). She seems surprised when wee comes out when nappy-free, or doesn't even realise it's happened and carries on with what she's doing. I've taken that to mean she's not ready yet. She does know when she's done a poo, and did go through a phase of telling me seconds before it happened, but has stopped doing that now.

Thanks guys! I think I'll leave it to one side for now :) I'll try again in a couple of months.
