Problems with using public toilets and pooing

DS is 3.5 and we have had some success with getting him to go for a wee on the toilet or the potty...at home.

We've had him in underpants a few times to get him used to the them, with no accidents and with the support of nursery, took the plunge and sent him in underpants. He was quite happy without his nappy and had two relatively good days, with the usual wet accidents but not too many. However, he refuses to use a public toilet. No matter how desperate he is to go, he used won't use one.

He got hysterical at just the mention of going to the toilet today and it took us quite a while to calm him down. Anyway, when we were almost ready to go home he did a poo in his underpants. I knew that he wanted to go, he knew that he wanted to go but there was no way on this earth that he was going on a toilet. He had to stay like that until we got home as there was no where that we could go to change him. As soon as we were home, he proceeded to wee as well. He had 2 further poos (had been holding it in for a couple of days since he went to nursery in underpants) one of which I managed to get him on the toilet for although he was very upset and didn't want to do it.

I know that we've only just started, but should we give it up as a bad job for a few weeks and then try again? Should we let him have a nappy on just for the purpose of pooing (but that seems like such a waste!)?

Also, any hints/tips for using public toilet for anything!

If you've got this far, thanks for reading ThanksSmile

have you tried taking a travel potty with you?

Thanks Pirate
That is on my "to buy" list. This was his first time out other than at nursery so not a problem I'd thought about.

We have a travel potty as well, called porta potty. It's very convenient you can close it after use and take it home/to a toilet to clean and the little ones usually like carrying it around themselves.

As it turns out my DD is obsessed with sampling other toilets and will ask to use any new toilet, but that's 3 year olds for you.

My ds will only go on toilet (public or home) if it has his special seat - training seat thing, might be worth a try? I think big toilets scare the life out them to begin with. Hope you have success soon. Xx

Thanks Flowers

We've actually gone back to nappies now as he was refusing to go at all either on the toilet or the potty Sad

We're going to try again on a few weeks.
