Training dd 2.10 and self awareness

Hello,

So my dd is 2.10 and has shown no interest whatsoever in being potty trained. Yesterday was the first day of me sitting her on the loo and I think she thinks it's just some sort of game. I should add she is not talking much yet although all I've spoken to thinks that she is slowly getting there. She's had accidents but it doesn't bother her just points at it and then carries on playing and gets annoyed when I take her to the toilet I'm concerned as really it needs doing by end of summer when she starts pre school.

It did sound to me today that she said she wanted wee pointing at the toilet so I sat her on it but then after a few seconds wanted to get off then had an accident about ten mins later. Shall I just keep sitting her on it in the hope one time she will go while on it and understand? She is my first so I'm a bit clueless, thanks x

If she's not ready, she's not ready. She needs to have some awareness that she is weeing or pooing before you can start, and if she doesn't have this she won't be able to know when she's going to go and so go on the toilet/potty.

If she a bit later with talking she may well be a bit later with potty training too. Does she sign at all? If you can tell when she's doing a wee or a poo you can try telling her "are you doing a wee-wee/poopoo? Clever girl!" And doing the sign so she knows what you are talking about and can start to connect the word/sign and the sensation. When she starts telling you she is weeing or pooing you would then have a better chance of training her.

Take her to the toilet when you go and ask her if she wants to have a try after - all little steps that might help it to click in her mind what you want her to do.

The preschool will be used to having children in nappies and it shouldn't be a problem but contact them and check. They can't exclude a child for not being potty trained and it might help her to understand and feel more comfortable.

Language and potty training are linked. They need to be at a good level of understanding language before it can be successful.
I would forget toilet training for now.
If you think she is a little behind with her language ask you health visitor to refer her to speech and language therapy.
