3yr old potty training - end of my tether!

Any advice appreciated all - having problems toilet training my 3yr old daughter. She's very hit and miss with the potty, but very advanced in other areas. When I ask her why she doesn't tell us she needs the toilet its apparently because she's too busy... Would it be worth putting her in knickers instead of pull ups (cos we all know there's nothing worse than being in wet knickers)? Its like going to the toilet is a total inconvenience to her. I've tried explaining that it only takes a few minutes and you can carry on playing after..... Im frustrated cos I know she's capable if she could be bothered.

Have you tried incentives/bribery? With ds, I got him to help me make a star chart where every time he went properly i would draw a star and he could choose what colour I should colour it in. That worked to start with then a bit later we progressed to stickers and even chocolate (for poos!) as rewards.

From her point of view it IS a waste of time. Put her in knickers and use rewards.

Pull ups are the devils work! DS would've peed himself forever more in them. You could try the dry like me pads. They catch most of the wee but go cold quickly and still feel wet. Were a lifesaver with us.

I would try knickers and then she will soon realise the time lost from a change of clothes is much greater than that of just using the toilet!

The only thing I think pull ups are usefull for are helping practice the pulling up and down of pants and trousers. Dd just used them exactly the same as nappies. I would ditch them. One of the many tips I read during my attempts with dd was not to rush and change immediately after an accident, allow them too feel how uncomfortable it is being wet so they don't want it to happen again, only a minure or two just not straight away.

My daughter is 3 and a half had her in knickers since last October and still she doesn't get it!!! Reward charts treats lots of praise and still lots of accidents just feel very stressed and not sure what to do with her???

MrsCosmopilite · 29/01/2014 22:46

I tried potty training my DD at 2.6 and although she was walking and talking well and seemingly ahead in a lot of things, she just didn't get it.

I found the book "Stress free potty training" by Geraldine Butler and Bernice Walmsley really useful as it gives tips on what to look out for to indicate that your child is ready, and how to encourage them. I backtracked a bit, and about a month and half later she was good and ready. She's been in knickers and dry at night for a fair old while now. (Just need to persuade her to actually go to sleep when she goes to bed!)

Cheers ladies, we were having a chat tonight about having a special reward chart so I'm going to give that and "big girls knickers" a try. Fingers crossed_!
