A week in to potty training....how/when does dd start to initiate trips to loo?

We've done a week of me putting her on the potty/toilet regularly, and dd (2.7) has definitely learnt to hold on: we've done car journeys, walks, and she's waited till we get home. We've had whole days without accidents, but its me initiating potty/loo visits. She's also been dry several mornings, and after her naps - first time ever.
BUT if I don't take her to the loo, she just carries on playing and pees/poos in her pants - even if I've asked her if she needs to go. She'll then tell me, and even go to the potty - but doesn't seem to know when she's about to go.
Feel silly asking, but does this just take a bit longer? Do I need to let more accidents happen for her to learn? Or do I keep going with the prompting till she 'clicks'? She's dead proud so far, me too of course, but...help!

We have been potty training DD2 for a week and we only initiate when we are going out

Xena · 30/07/2006 21:01

the rest of the time she tells us. We have left her potty in the downstairs toilet now.

Lucky you! But my dd doesn't. One friend did tell me she initiated for at least a week with her dd, who then 'got it'. Just not sure how that happens and how I can help...do you think NOT initiating actually helps them learn to know?

I think so, its difficult if you know that they need to go but I think you need to let them decide.

OK, well, will try it tomorrow - thanks!

Elibean I have the same problem. DS is 2.4 and have been potty training 2 weeks.

In all other respects DS is doing great but he doesn;t ask to go at all...or at least he didn;t, until this morning! He announced he needed a wee and took himslef off to the toilet.

So now I know he knows...

I am just going to carry on reminding for as long as it takes, I'm not going back to nappies.

I do notice his awareness seems to nosedive when he's tired too, so I know I need to keep more of an eye out then.

Just realized too, been at other peoples' houses all weekend - not the best place to experiment with letting dd initiate

my ds2 is 2.3 and we are on day 5 of seriuos training (no nappies or pull ups except at bedtime).

Already he is getting the nack of taking his clothes off and finding the potty.

He is more reluctant with the toilet but hey you can't have everything!

Well, dd asked to use the toilet twice today - first thing this morning (dry nappy!) and straight after her bath, whereupon one big pee and one poo. And one happy Mummy.
When we're out, or she's busy playing, its another story - she doens't initiate and isn't keen when I prompt either, but if I think back a mere week this is enormous progress. Like you said, Shiny, can't have everything...
Wondering whether I should risk nappies off at night yet? Dry nappies every morning, but instinct tells me to wait till I know she knows what needing a pee actually feels like...
