10 days in, all wees in potty / all poos in pants

Just that, really. I am 10 days into potty training DS2 (2.8). He got the hang of weeing in the potty really quickly (he instigated potty training, asking not to wear nappies any more), and is almost 100% reliable on this score (although rarely asks to go for a wee - he seems to just hold on until I ask if he needs, usually every couple of hours). His nappies have been dry at night since day 2, and I think we're going to try without night nappies from tomorrow.

Poos are another issue! On days 1 and 2 he managed poos in the potty, but since then every single poo (one or two each day) has been in his pants. He tells me as soon as he has had an accident (and shouts to be changed), but he just doesn't seem to be getting the hang of telling me first, or of trying for a poo when he's on the potty anyway.

How can I encourage him to poo in the potty? He tends to go at the same sort of time every day, but putting him on the potty at this time doesn't help: he will do a wee, then have a poo accident 5 minutes later. I've been doing reward stickers / smarties, but have cut these out for wees now. I have offered him "poo prizes", but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I had exactly the opposite problem with DS1 - he got the hang of pooing in the potty very quickly, but had wee accidents for a long time (and was in night nappies until he was over 4), so I feel a bit clueless on this one.

quite common - dd had no probs with wee, but omg - the poo nightmare took years of ritual nappy on, kneel on rocking horse, lean on sofa. Never poo'd in potty, just straight to lav. Prob scared. No idea how to 'cure' it, just offering supportive pat on arm

Thank Julia, I hadn't really considered that he might be scared. I'll try to create a nice comforting poo ritual (!!) and see if that helps.

We had a similar problem.

Eventually we made a note of the times he pooed and when it was coming up to that time sat him on the potty and put the telly on. Once he had done one or two it clicked, then we haven't had any accidents since.

Both my younger boys did this. I nearly went insane because they would just stand there playing with toys and do it just as I was asking/telling them to go. The older one took weeks to sort it and I drew up a reward chart with stickers, the younger one got bribed with sweets and got it after a few weeks of constant reminders.

dd1 was like this.
we gave her a huuugge reward on catching the first poo in the potty (about three weeks after we started training Hmm)

that was all it took - catching one, big reward. clean pants from then on. to catch the first one, we persuaded her to have a loooong sit on the potty while we looked at a new cbeebies mag after breakfast.

Thanks everyone. It sounds as if full on bribery / some Thomas watching sessions might be a good strategy! I'll give it ago. It's nice to know he's not the only one.
