Following a fungal infection, 3 yr old hysterical about doing a wee

My toilet learning toddler was generally doing fine but developed what doctor thinks is/was a fungal infection. He had been reluctant to do wees but I initially thought he was just being stubborn, as he can be. However took him to doc when he screamed hysterically and didn't go to the toilet for a day. Swabs for UTI came back clear, but DS1 remains hysterical, alternates hopping and rocking about, cries to be in his bed, wails that he doesn't like doing wees, and just will not go. Back in nappies today after he weed on the floor twice yesterday and as it seems inevitable that he will go sometime but not of his own volition.

I have tried warm baths, he just screams and goes rigid as a board, so can't get him to sit. Tried taking him out for a change of scene where he is fine for a but then frantically runs around as he so desperately needs to go. He now won't eat as presumably too stressed, has been drinking water well but not the last hour or so.

Trying to stay calm, but failing now, and his baby brother isn't getting much of a day.

Any tips to help the toddler?

I should add, am applying a cream for the infection, he has been prescribed ibuprofen to deal with any pain. I am now into the third day of this and am struggling with it. Don't really think another doc visit will help (have been twice in the three days) esp as no UTI evident.

Anyone?! Into the 5th day, am sure there is a psychological element now rather than physical but I am baffled as to how to reassure a just turned 3 year old that doing a wee is ok, whether it be in a nappy, on potty or the toilet. He has almost lost his voice from the screaming and whimpering.

Urinary tract infection. Go to doctors and get meds.

Sorry just reread your posts. What happened when he weed on the floor, was he in pain?

Thanks for responding. He says before he needs to do a wee that he doesn't like doing wees, and cries/whimpers. He holds out a long time. He screams when he does, but then is a happy bunny again afterwards for a while. We have a hospital apt sometime this week (date yet to be confirmed) but I think we have to.just try not to make it an issue as I am sure now it is his fear of pain following the fungal infection rather than actual pain, altho holding on so long will probably be causing a lot of discomfort.

Ds is like this, has been episodes with wees and poo. Same about refusing baths etc.

I do think it is psychological, started when he started nursery, and again after he was ill. I have got through it by talking to him about why it has to come out, saying its best in the toilet but pants, nappy etc is ok too if he is finding it difficult. Have you got one of those My Body books?

I also bribed him with chocolate, playing Angry Birds. Not great I know but couldn't bear him screaming in pain.

Thank you Kits, I hope your Ds's episodes pass. I will look up the My Body books, they might be helpful. At the moment bribes don't seem to be incentive enough. I might actually go to the hospital today just to hopefully rule out anything physical. Then it will be a matter of 3 year old psychology. He has a baby brother who just turned one so the situation is making family life unbearable, however I also think that DS1 is struggling with the attention that his baby brother needs.

Deep breath...this too will pass!

Update! Went to hospital. They think two things likely. One is constipation, making it biologically difficult and painful to wee. He has def been constipated. Second, very tight foreskin making the penis 'balloon' when he is doing a wee, which actually I have noticed.

So, after an enema (which he was really good with, not painful), and a huge wee & poo, he was like a different boy - really happy and chirpy. Prescribed lactulose for a month to try to get more regular bowel movements, and betnovate cream to try to help with the foreskin. Back to hosp if things don't improve. Fingers crossed!
