My little boy is coming up to 19 months, and I'm unsure when to start potty training him, he knows when he is going and doesn't really like wearing nappies. I'm leaning towards trying him but my partner thinks to leave it a bit longer? He can't say very many words so I don't want that to effect his opinion on the toilet- like if he's scared! Any advice would be amazing!!

Thanks

Honestly, I would think this is to early, most are between 2.5 and 3 when they train successfully, and if can say from experience if you push it too early you just end up with months and months of clearing up, vs waiting until they are 100% ready! and it's done and dustier in days! Would he tolerate pull ups any better?

I'm in exactly the same position as you. We've started, but with no pressure or expectations. My DD goes on the potty first thing in the morning and last thing at night for a try, but no worries if she doesn't do anything. Then she's in nappies for the rest of the day. We've been doing this for about a week so far. I know she gets the idea, but so far hasn't done anything. You could try him and see how he reacts. If he reacts badly you'll know he's not ready. Is he generally quite a nervous child?

As long as you don't expect him to be nappy free in, say, a week, I don't see the harm in trying.

You are the best judge of this....it is quite early, but I got a potty chair set up at this age and my ds and dd used it, with no pressure, from 18 months, before bath time and when watching a little telly.......I waited until the warmer weather (May/June) when they were pretty much 2.... They were both clean and dry by 2yrs 2 months.

Good luck Thanks

Thank you for all the advice!! I think I will just get a potty in the house but wait to start training him in the summer! I tried him on a seat that goes on top of the toilet and to be honest he was petrified so I took him off.
AmeliaRose- He is not really a nervous child quite outgoing but he has had a few problems with constipation so he doesn't like going to the toilet really! But I think it might be a waiting game with him. He's my first so I feel very out of my depth at the moment :(

Try it for a couple of weeks, if he doesn't get the hang of it then you could try again in the summer or when he seems ready.

I'd take my queues from him really. If he's terrified to go on the toilet seat, then pushing him will only make it worse. We let our DD come to the toilet with us and watch (a little odd when she's staring intently at your bits lol). We also talk through what's happening with her. She likes to pretend to wipe herself so we just let her.

She's my first too, so am also a total first timer on the potty training thing. I'm hoping, like everything else, we'll just muddle through and end up where we should haha.

Good luck! xxx

*cues even. Mental block!

joanneandreasen · 07/01/2014 13:12

I know what you mean there! Everything has been quite challenging but we've seemed to make the best out of it! I know I'm biased and all that but he is so well mannered and a loving boy so I was hoping we did it all right!!
After the toilet incident I took him straight off and let him run around the bathroom and he keeps going up to it so at least it hasn't put him off! I'll try him coming in with us, we haven't done that yet! He can't talk yet but I think he does understand what we are saying.. so we will give it a try!! thank yoou :)
