Help! Throwing up over the contents of DD's potty... [TMI warning!]

I started potty training my DD yesterday, and she's been an absolute star. She's doing really well and she's used her potty several times for both wees and poos. The problem is the smell of the potty after she's used it is enough to start me retching, and when it comes to actually pouring the contents into the toilet I can't stop myself from vomiting along with it! So far I've been letting her come into the bathroom with me to watch me flush away her efforts, but she's never seen me throw up before and I think it's confusing for her. So I won't be letting her come in with me anymore.

Is there any way to stop this happening!?! How does everyone else cope with it all!?!

Dab some Vic or a nice oil under your nose?

Is it the wee or poo that does it? Not something I struggled with - the smell of someone else's poo ain't great but I hold my breath tip and flush.

get a toddler loo seat so she can do her business directly into the toilet?

Artandco · 23/12/2013 11:53

This is why I never brought a potty. Just buy a toilet seat and they can use toilet. Then just flush and no poo/ wee empting! The idea of a potty really grosses me out

I've got a toddler seat for the toilet, but she refuses point blank to use it and she's doing so well with the potty I don't want to overwhelm her.

It's the poos that cause the problem really, and it's never just 'tip and flush' - I always have to get some tissue in there and scrape it out Xmas Envy (meaning sickness not envy!)

I think Vicks might be a might harsh on my upper lip, but I appreciate the suggestion! I'll see if I can find something a little gentler on my skin but still strong-smelling to mask the problem! Thanks!

Can you line the potty with a sheet of kitchen roll so you can slide the whole thing into the bog with no scraping required?

mousmous · 23/12/2013 12:01

nooooo kitchen roll should not be flushed, just use toilet roll (great idea btw.)

Great idea! Will try it thanks!

was about to suggest toilet roll in the potty too. I used to clean up the potty then leave some paper in there in anticipation so it was ready for next time. DS took a long time to sit on the loo. It helped to have a training seat with handles and a high step so his feet were not dangling. Ikea do a higher one.

Hey - thanks for posting this. We started potty training my DD yesterday also and she managed 2 poo’s in the potty today. We were soooo delighted and praised her to bits – but when I took the potty away I ended up retching – it’s so weird as have never ever had a problem with her nappies. Guess they are never quite as instantly fresh as this when the get changed. I’ll defo try the vix/putting toilet paper in so thanks for those suggestions. I’m 17weeks pregnant with number 2 and just getting over morning sickness so that’s probably not helping!!

Ps – great to hear your wee ones doing so well! They are total wee troopers aren't they!
