Almost successful but too many accidents!!

DD is 2.5 - she has been in pants for the last 6 weeks, we started well and she would run to the toilet when she needed a wee or poo and can either use the potty or hoist herself up on to the toilet seat (with toddler seat on). We were having maybe one accident a day but then she was poorly.

She had diarrhoea for nearly two weeks and didn't have a single accident in that time - we think because her tummy hurt she was more aware of needing the loo.

Unfortunately since she has been better it is almost as if she has forgotten the signs that she needs a wee - we maybe have one successful wee in the toilet everyday and all the others are in her pants as she just stands where ever she is and shouts WEE WEE!! as it is pouring down her legs.

Sooo...my question is do I try pull ups of some variety or just persevere with the pants...I fear that it will confuse her but I am at my wits end I have a 5 month old DS as well and I am feeling utterly housebound because I dread going anywhere in case she wets herself.

I am so sleep deprived I can't make my own rational decisions - can someone please tell me what to do!

I would go back into pulls ups, give it a couple if weeks, get the stress of christmas out the way and then start again. I kept at it for 6 weeks, went back to pull ups again, then when we tried again a month later done and dusted in 3 days. Sometimes I think they just need the pressure being taken back a bit Smile

Hiya- firstly, sympathies! I work in childcare and we often have 5 or 6 children potty training at the same time with the same sort of issues you are facing.
The one key thing for us is asking- very regularly- if they need the toilet. This firstly helps them to think about if they do and hopefully avoid accidents and secondly helps them to learn to recognise the signs of needing the toilet by themselves.

I would continue as hard as it is, as being back in pull ups can be a big backwards step for many children.

Thank you both for your replies...all I need now is another vote as currently I am still confused Grin
Today from 8.30 - 2.30pm I asked every half hour or so if she needed the loo, a couple of times we got as far as sitting on it and then "no thank you mummy, no wee wee" ... at approx 2.31 she stood in the middle of the lounge and wee'd!

Hmm as the pp said if your child is not quite ready then putting them back in pull ups isn't a bad thing- but the fact that she was fine before and during her illness says to me that she is.
I would keep trying, grit my teeth, praise lots when she goes and remind her she needs to go on the toilet when she has an accident.
It does get easier and you will get there!

I'd not go back to pull-ups. When DD was potty trained she had a phase of not going to the loo after weeks of managing. It was like the novelty had worn off.
