When to go out without a nappy

My DS is 2 years 9 months and after a few abortive efforts we seem to be making some progress with pt. He is going to the potty fairly consistently at home and seems to be getting the idea of when he needs to go. He also seems to be going longer between wees (where before it was little bits on a regular basis, it is now proper wees with a couple of hours in between).
One thing that really confuses me about this whole process is what to do about going out. I need to go to the supermarket this afternoon, and am wondering whether I should a) take him out in his 'big boy pants' and risk a situation, b) take him out in his big boy pants but cart a potty round Sainsbury's with me (suitably bagged up, obv) or c) take him out in his nappy, which I am concerned will confuse him and set us back.
We went out earlier today in the car and I put him in his 'big boy pants' (which in this case were training pants) and spent the entire journey asking him if he needed to go. Right at the end he said he did, and I asked him to hold on until we got home which he didn't. No big deal, but it got me wondering at what point in the pt process you're meant to risk going out without the protection of nappies. I don't want to confuse him, but nor do I often see little puddles of wee when I go round the shops, so I assume people don't go out without protection until their DC are fully trained? Bit confused!!

I just take spare sets of clothes if accidents ensue

I'm in the same position - I've been taking potty out in a bag, and being prepared to run to the nearest toilet or baby change facility when he tells me he needs to go! Also, going out as soon as he's had a wee to limit chances of problem on the way there... So far surprisingly only one accident while out and about, and that was at toddler group so they are well used to it Grin

I'm actually sitting here wondering if I can get away with not going to the Supermarket this afternoon! He woke up from his nap in a really bad mood and has refused to wear his pants so far. He's sitting eating his lunch with nothing on! Perhaps not the best time to attempt a proper outing...hmm, not sure.

I used to just take a disposable changing mat to fold and put in the car seat under him and take spare joggies, pants and socks! (don't forget the socks like I always did!)

I think it's a good idea to take the potty with you. I did a shop with DD, brought the potty and offered it to her before and after the shop (in the toilets). This gave her ample opportunity to use it thereby minimising risk of puddles on the shop floor!
We also bought some disposable changing mats and put those in the car seat and buggy, just in case.

But I can totally understand if he's grumpy and doesn't want to put on his pants you might just want to avoid it today if possible.
