DD is 2.3 and has been v interested in the loo for a while, wants to sit on it and do a "peepee". She hasn't actually ever done one, but still. She's quite a good talker and it's really hot here (abroad) so decided to have her bare bottomed, get the pot out and have a good go.

I've had her sitting on the pot quite a lot and she's managed one wee yesterday and a couple of teeny tiny poos, but they were accidental IYSWIM. She happened to pee and poo while sat on the pot playing with a toy. Made loads of fuss, clapping and gave her a little prize, but today despite lots of pot sitting she's managed 2 big wees on the floor, a poo on the floor (which the dog ate before I could pick it up...BLEURGH) and nothing in the potty.

Maybe she's too young. But I don't want to give up too soon. DS got it on day 4 or 5 but he was 3.

its only been 3 days! think how long she's been used to just peeing wherever she's standing! her brain needs time to retrain out of that habit and learn to do it in the potty every time. please relax. she will get it with patience and consistent praise from you. ignore the peeing on the floor, or if you must comment say something like "next time you feel the wee coming you go on the potty ok?" but keep it cheery not discipliny Grin

different dcs take different lengths of time to 'get it' she is young but keep at it for another week or so and if she isn't starting to get it by then just stop for a few months and then try again.

GoodtoBetter · 21/08/2013 15:21

Thanks, you're right, of course! ignore the peeing on the floor, or if you must comment say something like "next time you feel the wee coming you go on the potty ok?" but keep it cheery not discipliny I do this, I am very good at it and I'm not forcing the potty, have managed to get her to sit on it a LOT but I'm not pushing it. She stood up the other day and said "peepee no come out" so I said, "fine, if you want a wee, sit on the pot, OK?" and we went and played on the patio for a bit with the pot nearby.

We have to go out for about 2 hours tomorrow (there is no way round it) including a car trip of about 20 mins each way, but I don't want to confuse her with nappies so early on. I guess we'll put a towel on the car seat and take various changes of clothes. I've got a potette but I know she's not at the stage of telling me in time to get her sat on it.

yep, bring lots of changes of clothes, put her on the potty just before you leave the house then again as soon as you stop the car (I always need to pee after I've been sitting down for any length of time for some reason) then if possible every half hour whilst you are out and again before going back in the car and then again as soon as you get home.

it will be very hit and miss to start but you should start to see an increase in hits over time. also, not sure if you are already doing this or not but try and keep a rough idea of how soon after eating/drinking she is peeing and pooing then you can start to pre-empt it and get her on the potty in time for it.

GoodtoBetter · 21/08/2013 15:32

I've been watching the wees and poos to see if there's a pattern but it seems a bit hit and miss at the moment. first day was 4 wees in the morning but then today nothing all morning and then super flood. Poos are a bit random too.

StephenFrySaidSo · 21/08/2013 15:46

could also be affected by what she is doing at the time and how much she is drinking. also the 4 pees yesterday and then a superflood today might be her trying to hold on to it which is good progress after 1 day!! Grin

GoodtoBetter · 21/08/2013 15:57

well, it is FARKING HOT here atm (high of 42º today) so she is drinking quite a bit but is also sweating quite a lot too. She smells gently of sweat and wee :)

lovely combination!

Another poo accident, this time on me....dog was standing nearby licking her lips....

OP posts:
StephenFrySaidSo · 21/08/2013 17:09

it's not an accident! try and lose that mindset- it's what her body has been trained to do for her entire life- don't think of it as an accident- think of it as her still functioning under the old plan- it will take time to transition to the new plan but she's not 'failing' or having 'accidents' she's just doing what she always has done.

it's like someone suddenly telling you that sleeping isn't done at night or in a bed anymore, they've removed your bed and installed 24 hour fluorescent lights in the house. you must sleep standing up and only when they tell you. you would take time to retrain your body out of a habit that you have spent your whole life doing.

GoodtoBetter · 22/08/2013 07:55

Hurrah! One small poo and a large wee in the pot this morning! Wish me luck for the trip out we have to do today!

dd1 took five days or so to get her head around potty training.
until that point we were basically knee-deep in wee. then the penny dropped, and we were sorted. i reckon give it at least a week if you can stand the laundry.

also, both of mine were better outside of the home. they liked the excitement of visiting a new loo, and of telling any random old lady that they were wearing pants. accidents seemed more frequent at home when they weren't concentrating as much. Hope your trip out goes well.

GoodtoBetter · 23/08/2013 08:01

There's not much laundry at all as it's so hot here and we have only taken out once for more than 2 mins round the block, so she's pretty much just running around naked. It's all tiles and rugs (which I've taken up) so it's just mopping.
Getting cabin fever all the same and DS is bored so we're off to the park with a pottette today.

Another big flood.

OP posts:
GoodtoBetter · 23/08/2013 11:45

and another. Think I might go back to nappies for a few months and try again when she's 2.5. She doesn't seem to be able to hold it for long enough to get to the pot or loo. Just "pipi!" and whoosh. It's all a bit much in 40° and a 5 yo to entertain as well.

StephenFrySaidSo · 23/08/2013 11:51

You do seem quite impatient tbh- its only been 5 days. But if its the wrong time for you then its best to put it off for a while and try again when you're ready to cope with it. Potty training is messy- no way around that Grin

GoodtoBetter · 23/08/2013 12:16

Maybe I am being impatient, but I reckon for it to work she needs to do 4 things:

1.understand she is supposed to wee in the pot
2.recognise the feeling of needing to go
3.hold it long enough to get to the pot
4.release it once she's on the pot

So far I think she understands number 1 but I don't think she can do the other 3 at all, maybe that's more developmental than anything?

She's only 2.2, maybe it's too soon for 2,3 and 4?

DS tbf did get it on day 4-5 but he was 3. Once he got it, he was fine. I probably felt like this at this same stage with him too, I can't remember.

A question....with DS we did Friday, Sat, Sun at home, basically on the pot loads and not going out, then from the Monday he was at nursery all morning. Atm we've done Mon pm, Tues, and Weds at home but then yday and today we've been out for a couple of hours (prepared with potette and change of clothes) I've got her to go before, when we get there, before we leave etc and reminded while there. When at home I try to get her on the pot for a bit every hour or so and remind from time to time. Does this sound OK? Will she just twig? When do I decide she's not going to get it? See, with DS after the first 3 days he was at nursery all morning and then had a nap, so it was only a couple of hours in the afternoon and then he was dry really fast.

I think I should persevere as she does seem to get number 1 and also, she's not weeing all the time, like sometimes they are at that age. She gets up at 7ish, does a large one around 9 or 10 and then again at 12 or 1 then naps at 3. This morning she was on and off the pot at the right time but then the moment she wasn't, out it came.

oops, that was long. Blush

Personally i would give it a full two weeks of sitting on the potty every 30 minutes ( set an alarm) including as soon as she wakes up, after sitting in the car and after meals. She is drinking A LOT due to the heat so will need to pee loads.

The fact that there are floods rather than small freqquent pees suggests she is holding it to some extent. Also the fact that she is saying peepee right before is the sign that she does recognise the feeling of needing to pee, its just not early enough yet to get to the pot on time but that will come.

StephenFrySaidSo · 23/08/2013 12:29

Id say if there is no improvement at all by end of day 14 then stop for a while and try again when shes a bit older. She is still very yoiung.

GoodtoBetter · 23/08/2013 13:52

Another flood on the floor and a big poo on the floor, both with no warning.
She's got a suspicious looking rash and is very clingy. I shall see how she is when she wakes, but I am of the opinion that if they're ready it doesn't take 2 weeks, and there's plenty of time yet. Thanks for all the advice, it's given me plenty to think about.
