Won't poo in potty - waits for nappy! Argh!!

DS is nearly always dry during the day but WILL NOT poo in the potty. He waits till nap time/bedtime and does it in his nappy every time! Means naps are cut short cos he's uncomfortable, or he gets up at night wanting changing, or he has a sore bum in the morning.

Anyone have any advice?

Mine's been dry for about 3 months, day and night, but she only poos in a nappy.

So now I'm just not putting a nappy on her. I am tempted to fill her up with a load of pears and wait for what happens. It concerns me that she might get constipated, so I have been putting a nappy on her to let her poo each evening, but I've stopped as of yesterday.

She's not been yet. She happily talks the talk (I'll try for a poo, get chocolates and presents) but she hasn't properly tried on the toilet yet.

I have tried ripping the sides of a nappy and putting it inside the potty so she can poo into it, she didn't go for it, but it might work for yours.

Ooh that's worth a try! Might do it RIGHT NOW...

Ds only pooed in a nappy for 6 months after he was dry. He then started doing it in the loo of his own accord. I wouldn't worry. Learning to poo while sitting down on a potty / loo is very hard for little ones - and it can take a bit of time. As long as he is given the opportunity to practise and you gently suggest (but don't force) going to the toilet whenever he does his 'poo' face Grin then it will come in time.

I will update with how it goes if you like?

Mine is 2.8. She's reliably dry at night, waits for her to wee the bed tonight now. She does sometimes scream for a nappy though, and I've always given in before now...

extracrunchy · 17/08/2013 19:53

Hmm so he didn't go on the nappy in the potty but seemed intrigued by the idea!

I wouldn't worry about the poo in nappies thing if he didn't get up and demand a nappy change in the middle of the night when he does it.

Thing is as well, when we first started training he did do it several times in the potty, but then we switched to toilet seat and he stopped, so switched back to potty but he's now firmly in the habit of doing it in nappies at night! Grin Toddlers...

Well she's gone up tonight sans nappy. No moaning, pretended to have a try for a poo on the toilet quite cheerfully before she went to bed.

Last night she had no nappy, got me up at 4am for a wee, she went back down fine. I am pleased she's realising that she needs to wee and waking up.

Nagoo · 17/08/2013 20:08

I've hidden the nappies under my bed. I shall pretend there are none left. Since we are about to open a brand new pack, Sod's law is on my side, eh?

DD (2.5years) would ask for a nappy to poo. It didn't bother me too much as she was dry day and night at this point.

It just kind of happened. She asked to go for a wee (she never asks for a poo for some reason) and had a poo in the big girl toilet. It took about 6 trips for her to finish having a poo, she doesn't like to sit on the toilet for more than 2 mins to let nature take it's course. Gradually, she spent more and more time on the toilet and now is quite happy to sit there with a book!!
Don't force it on them, let them do it at their own pace

We got the poo last night.... in the pyjamas. She was a bit upset, but I cleaned her up and she was asleep in 15 minutes again, so it's not put me off.

I tried to encourage her to do it before bed, but she told me it would hurt her. This morning I asked her if the poo had hurt and she said no, and seemed quite keen to try on the toilet first thing this morning. So we will persevere.

My ds2 and my ds4 both did this, they eventually pooed in the potty, didn't find any tricks that helped but putting a nappy on/in the potty was on e we tried, they got it in the end. Its quite common :)

DS pooed in his potty before bed last night!!! We've built 10-15min private quiet time on potty into bedtime routine and he did nothing first couple of nights but success this time! Hope he does it again tonight Smile

Oh well done. I've had poos in the bed, in the jamas and in the country park but none in the toilet yet..... Hmm

extracrunchy · 23/08/2013 11:55

Oh no!! We didn't risk the no nappy at night thing - happened by accident once (shockingly!) and the outcome was horrendous! Just know he goes within 5 mins of being in bed and quiet so thought we'd try proper quiet before bed.

We made such a fuss of him when he did, hopefully he'll try again tonight but I'm not counting on it!

Ok, well we didn't crack, we got to the point where for the last 3/4 days she'd do the, erm, second half Envy into the toilet without seeming upset about it, and trying to claim glory for doing the poo in the right placewhile I hosed her down

But the last two days, we've had warning, and she's actually managed to tell us in enough time that she's going on the toilet :) Woo!

Everyone is high fiving and very happy :)
