How often should toddlers go?

I have a 3.3 yr old Ds.
We have been potty training for a while and he has started to have (much) fewer accidents but by dint of getting better at holding it in all morning/ afternoon!

He can not go to the potty all morning or afternoon ( 5 + hours) regularly, even in hot weather with me encouraging lots of water drinking. He will then go in his pull ups, which he still has for sleeping in.

He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable but am not sure if it's too healthy - the other toddlers we know seem to go at least twice as often as that. Any views/ reassurance?

My DD has always gone about 3 times in 24 hrs, which seemed like very little to me. A paediatrician friend told me that less than 3 times would be alarming them re: dehydration so I was reassured that Dd was on the right side of that cut off.

Sorry,
Posted too soon.

So my advice is hearsay, & you don't say how often he is going, but it might just be his normal.

About 3 times in 24 hrs :) good to know some hearsay is on his side at least.

I was astonished when I potty trained DS1 when he was nearly 3, at how little he actually went to the loo. I felt that I couldn't say he was potty trained as he never actually wet himself but he hardly went to the toilet either!

For example - one day he got up in the morning (his nappy from night time was wet), refused to wee. We went out for the day and I was so nervous as he hadn't weed. An hour car journey, a day out at a farm, drinks, ice-cream etc. No wee. Hour car journey home, arrived home at 5.30pm. He calmly went to the toilet about half an hour later and did a wee. The first of the day.

He has incredible bladder control. If we are out and he doesn't like the look of the public toilets he will just wait. It made potty training so much easier. He drinks plenty and his wee isn't dark.

However, I can't get him dry at night! I think he must save it all up (although surely that isn't possible as each time he wees he must empty his bladder!)

This does sound like my DS actually! So far he's only gone about 6.5 hrs max but it may just be a matter of time :).

I guess it threw me because a couple of weeks ago he was having accidents a lot more than that and I was expecting that to translate to number of successful potty trips iykwim. Doesn't seem to be working like that though!

Good luck with the night time btw - think I'll need to summon up serious resolve for that one! Do you wake him up? Mine is dry in the morning if I wake him but (very) wet if he wakes himself up. It's like he can't hold it while half asleep - only asleep or awake!

Am perhaps thinking that maybe I should ditch the nap time pull up soon though - not quite got up the nerve yet! It isn't usually dry but think that's just because he knows he's going to get it and still likes using it rather than he can't not

No, I don't wake him up as I just don't want to create a habit. We get a dry nappy a couple of times a week. I went cold turkey last week and he wet himself three nights in a row and didn't wake up so I really didn't want to continue as he clearly had no idea.

Nap time nappy is a tough one. I never ditched it as a few months after he was potty trained he gave up on the lunch time nap anyway.
