Hi.
I plan to potty train DS (2&8months) this/next week.
He has a couple of social engagements Grin toddler groups (today and monday) and I want to stock up on stickers and buttons so thought I would probs start on Tuesday so we can have a few days just at home before he has to try in public (yes he is my PFB and I am an "older" mum Grin )
So is the general consensus that a few days should let me know whether he can manage it? Or should I just stay at home with him from tomorrow after extensive reward purchases?
Many thanks
Em.

I think you need to expect it to take a long time and then if he does crack it sooner, you will be very pleased.

If you are going shopping get him to choose some big boy pants, that should help. We had this booj which was very good and DS had this book which he loved.

Book. Not sure what a booj is...

We did a pretty casual approach with dd and it seemed to work. She wore knickers as long as she wanted to at home, we still went out as usual but with a nappy, then after about a week when she was getting the hang of it she asked to wear knickers to toddler group and that was that. It's been nearly 2 weeks since then and she's doing really well, has the occasional accident but is generally good at asking for the potty/toilet. Poos are still a problem, she had longstanding poo issues and we always knew it would be difficult, but she's starting to get the idea. If your ds is ready it might not be too bad! Good luck.

Thanks for that. I have cabin fever already.

My DD told me 10 days ago 'no more nappies, big pants'

I went cold turkey, no nappies not even for car journeys etc.

I throught it would take about 2 wks or so, however 3 days later we she cracked it. Shock

We had 5 accidents on Day 1, 3 in Day 2 and then nothing on Day 3. We are dry at night too now, yet she's still wearing a nappy just in case.

To be honest I am gobsmacked she picked it up so quickly. But she wanted to do it which did help.

2 stickers for a poo and 1 sticker for a wee. Lots of whooping.

I got one of those seat cover boaster things and took that out and about instead of carrying a potty when they are a bit more established.

I cancellled all arrangements for 5 days (and the following weekend) so basically it took 7 days from taking nappies off to being completely dry. My boys were 2.4, DD was just turned 2.

That was enough time to ensure no accidents in supermarkets ( except DS1 who weed in my mums garden, as he didn't think she had a toilet Hmm)

A year and a bit. tbf - she had undiagnosed medical issues we didn't know about and which now explain why she was sometimes fine and sometimes awful.

However, I read that the average from starting training to being genuinely toilet trained and not needing help is 8mths.

So, expect it to take a while and if it's done in a few days (as some kids I know were) then awesome.

Ah thanks everyone. It's quite exciting really Hmm. So proud of him when he does a wee or poo on the potty. Grin Blush
Trouble is we have to go out tomorrow and Saturday. I just hope it doesn't set him back too much (not going into town without a nappy).
