I am about to start potty training my 18 month old DS...

He's definitely showing signs of being ready.. Im a bit worried as i have carpets in this house where as with other DS i had laminate flooring :/

So... I thought if anyone else is beginning potty training or has just started we could all use this thread and write daily updates abd help each other out!

I had great advice. Once they're ready, put them in pants and keep them in pants. I have been doing that (Day 8) and DS2 has really got the hang of it. His aim is terrible (does a standing up wee and slightly misses the potty) but he's getting the gist.

Awww well done Smile i must invest in pants! My DS just seems too tiny for pants lol x

My DS2 is 2.9 yrs, so don't worry of your 18mo doesn't take to it yet.

My DS kept taking his trousers and nappy off and using the potty of his own accord. I bought one yonks ago and just left it hanging around in the living room. His use of it told me he was ready so when we came from hols I just put him in pants and didn't venture very far for a week.

When we go to soft play I will put him in a pull up and still take him to toilet, but I can't risk him peeing on the equipment even though he has only had one or two accidents so far.

So buy a potty, let him wander round half a naked if he likes, big round of applause whenever he uses it, (my DS pees for a haribo), then pants only!

You can offer him a choice of pants in the shop so he feels involved.

Eek! one of DS1's friend's had a poo accident at soft play, luckily it was contained in her trousers. Shock

the advice I've had is to start wee boys sitting down to make it easier to poo, so we've not got to standing up weeing yet...

YouOldSlag · 02/09/2012 12:58

My boy started that way but in the last couple of days has done it standing up by getting his willy out of his pants. His aim is bad but the intention is good!

YouOldSlag · 02/09/2012 12:59

jaggy- oops!!- pull ups at soft play until they have gone a good while without accidents!

jaggythistle · 02/09/2012 13:33

i thought it was a bit ambitious as she'd only been at it a week or so. Grin

we've been using the 'potty training boys' book so it's a bit of a slower process (wasn't up for cold turkey with a new baby) but he's getting there.

it's the most tedious bit of child rearing so far for me. i made a mistake and got a rubbish toilet seat that he's not comfy on and have now ordered a better one, as I'm fed up emptying potties.

PrincessSparkle86 · 02/09/2012 15:05

Pee for a haribo... Has a ring to it lol!

Jaggy- o dear.. Pull ups next time :/

I have just purchased a potty and the seat to go on the loo.. Blue mickey mouse! Woo!

Now to go home and putbthe plan into action.. Wish me luck!!

2 wees on the carpet and one on the sofa so far :/ he seems scared everytime he sits on the potty... I suppose its because its something new though!!

We started a few days ago, ds is 2 next month. He trained himself to use the potty naked but transitioning to pants is proving really difficult. He does not tell us he needs to go at all. Rewards aren't really working but I think I need to be more consistent as I keep changing them when they don't work.
Wish I could keep him naked, he is near perfect then !

boredbuthappy · 06/09/2012 03:45

Oh, my DS is 18 months, and he tells me that he's done a poo, knows what the toilet is for, so I'm thinking these are signs that he's ready. Yes? I don't know! Sometimes he mentions pee out of the blue and I think maybe h's weeing at that time? I don't know where to being with this. AT ALL.

YouOldSlag · 06/09/2012 09:00

18 months is a bit young, but what I did at that age was leave a potty in the living room just so he was used to it, could sit on it if he wanted to etc. In his own time he did but not til he was more than 2 and a half!

choc- mine is the same. His potty training would be complete if he could be naked all the time, it's putting him in clothes and pants that's giving me a headache!

smornintime · 09/09/2012 16:52

Can I join?
Started DS in pants today - he knows what it's all about and we have been talking about it for a while. He is 3 in a month.
So far we have had 3 hits on the potty and 4 'accidents' (2 on the living room carpet...)
He is denying needing a wee and then will do one in his pants a minute later so we are trying to be a bit more determined to make him sit on the potty every so often. I'm sure he knows when he needs to go but just doesn't get yet that he should say so. I suppose it's early days.
He should go to nursery on Tuesday - maybe I should warn them tomorrow..?
