sleep regression and potty training?

Hi,

Hope this post makes sense but I've not had much sleep. Ds is 2.10 and has mastered the art of weeing on the potty, he is rightly proud of his ability Grin but is not yet clean. He is bothered by not knowing when he is about to poo and I think he is embarrassed by the soiled pants. We don't really know wether to give up or to plod on with potty training?

The past few nights have been dreadful, ds has screamed and screamed to come into bed with us which is unusual for him. We tried to stick it out but it was so upsetting that I got into bed with him. Stuff sleep training, he can co sleep for a bit.

My question is : do you think that the potty training and sudden poor sleep are linked?

I think that he needs some extra reassurance and that is why he can't go back to sleep. What should I do? Can I have lots of gin? Would that help?

My DS3 is the same age and having exactly the same problems. Is he dry at night? My DS now completely refuses to wee in a nappy so if he wakes up in the night and needs one he cries. I am trying to make sure he goes just before bed and am also not letting him drink too much in the evening. I do try and ignore him for a while if he cries to see if he can get back to sleep as I really don't want to encourage him getting up in the night for a wee.

My DS is also having problems with pooing. We have been away bank holiday weekend and I put him in pull ups to go out and about. He didn't wee in them at all and it took the pressure off when he did a poo (inevitably in his pull up).

I am not going to give up as DS like yours is good at going for a wee.

We are currently on a stand off for a poo. I am desperate for him to do one on the toilet and he is refusing.

I just keep thinking to myself that this cannot go on forever and that this time next week things will of improved................

Hi,

A poo stand off? I love it.

I hadn't thought about how confusing it might be to be dry all day then put back in a nappy at night. He hates weeing in a nappy now.

Yes we are going to keep going too. Couldn't possibly go on forever, can it?

DS (2.9) is now day potty trained and has been for about 2-3 weeks. However I definitely noticed a change in his sleep in the run up to this!

The whole process took around 4 weeks - had done lots of 'groundwork', like sitting and doing wees on the potty for about 3 months before that, he got quite good at doing wees on demand, but i only ever really bothered just before his bath and I wasn't remotely serious about it.
I only actually started properly due to nursery (he goes 2 days) saying he kept on taking his nappy off and trying to join in when some of the potty trained ones went off to the loo Blush

So, we went and bought big boy pants, had a chat about practicing etc and started with a few hours a day nappy free. And ping - his sleep went wonky! Waking in the night, funny dreams, not falling asleep easily and/or waking too early. However, now he's cracked it it's settled down loads.

Re: poos, don't know if this is helpful, but DS was a bit of a poo-denier at first. I just talked about poo with him more, particularly Pirate Pete and his sausage poo (its a book) and took him with me when I was doing a poo (despite hating pooing in front of anyone!) and gave him 3 chocolate raisins if he did a poo on the potty or loo. Bloody little monkey can now produce a poo, however small, whenever he fancies some chocolate raisins - so not sure you want to take that route!

Thanks shockedballoon, cool nn.

I would have left the little blighter longer but nursery had started to potty train and Ds wanted to wear pants and be like the other children. So we went with the flow (ho,ho)

Sleep wise that is just what is happening but I'm sure it will settle down when he gains confidence or when I am broken into tiny little pieces, whichever happens sooner.

Poo-denier: Love it! My vocabulary has increased just by logging onto Mn today, pity it's all poo related Smile 4 weeks is a realistic timescale for potty training. Thanks for your help, although you have now linked chocolate raisins, the number 3 and poo together, forever.

'Logged' on did you

...I used to have a mature, erudite wit before potty training... ah well.

Good luck Smile
