Where should we be after a month of potty training?

Dd did brilliantly at first. The first week there were a couple of accidents a day. The second week was perfect. But the last 2 weeks I've realised that this is only because I am sitting her on the potty every hour, not because she is aware when she needs a wee and chooses to go herself. If I leave it up to her she doesn't go on her potty and will have an accident. So I was wondering:
1 Do you think this is normal, or should she be aware by now when she needs to wee?
2 Should I stop putting her on the potty and let her have accidents until she learns that she needs to recognise when shee needs a wee?

Any advice or shared experiences appreciated, thanks

DS was out of nappies at 2.3, but if I'd waited until he asked to go to the toilet he would have had an accident for EVERY wee. Why bother going to the toilet when there are cars to play with/TV to watch/books to look at?

We just made sure we put him on the potty/toilet every 2 hours (or about half an hour after a big drink). Often this would lead to protests of 'I don't need a wee' followed by an enormous wee.

When did this stop? I can't honestly remember, but he must have been at least 4! At almost 6 he can still have accidents when there are more interesting things to be doing than going to the loo (I was the same). I think it has been some sort of minor miracle that he has had no accidents at school.

Poos have been different - he would always say he needed a poo.

It sounds to me like DD is doing fine - the novelty of using the loo has just worn off. If you could stretch potty visits out to 1.5 or 2 hours it would probably be more convenient if you are out and about, but otherwise it sounds fine.

Thanks, that was the sort of thing I was hoping to hear. I'll just keep going with putting her on the pot and hope she gradually gets the idea!

Thanks

we're still very patchy after 2 months, almost no success with poo at all, some with wee but only about 75%. I think I'll have to jump on the "extended training thread"

same here after 6 ish weeks. Ds is 2.7 and we have no accidents most days but only because we sit him on the potty every 2 hours. Poos are hit and miss we have managed to get a few on the potty but it is all about timing. I cant see too much of a problem with this as CM is supportive but hoping he will become a bit more 'proactive' soon.....

started training dd at 2.6 and similarly there were no accidents but only because I prompted at home and took her to toilets when out. As soon as I backed off she had accidents and it was clear she had no real control over her bladder. To me that's what potty training is, gaining control. There is a difference between being potty trained and being without nappies.

Took the decision to start using nappies again because I sensed We were both getting stressed, Which from training her older DS I know is the worst possible place to be.

Started again yesterday following a couple of successful out of nappy afternoons and she has had no accidents yet, Early days but I think this time round she has gained the ability to anticipate needing the toliet.

no harm in waiting

Sounds pretty normal to me. Westarted training DS when he was about 2.1. At first, he didn't get it at all (nor did we really) so there were lots of accidents. Then we realised we had to put him on every hour or so and he started to learn to wee "on command" before leaving the house, etc. Only in about the last month (he's now 2.4) has he started to say "Mummy wee wee" when he needs to go and will often sit on the potty by himself. We still remind him to go sometimes though as he'll often get so caught up in playing that he forgets!

So, I'd say that your DD is doing great.
