How will I know my DS is ready to Potty Train

My DS turned 2 the beginning of July and we are trying to decide if he is ready to be potty trained. He tells us when he has done a poo or sometimes when he wants to do a poo, up to 5-10 minutes before he actually does it. A couple of times he has told me he has a wet nappy.
He has a potty and knows that it is a potty, but he has not really shown any interest in it, a couple of times he has sat on it fully clothed briefly.
We are going away on holiday in a few weeks time and a wondering whether to take a potty with us. We will be somewhere hot so most of the time he will be running around in just his nappy whilst we are in the apartment.
We are also considering starting the training a week or so after we get back, once he is used to be back at home.

Any advice welcome, this is my first child so I have no idea on potty training.

Thanks

He will say "I don't want to wear nappies any more" you will say "ok darling, here are some pants and there is the loo"

And that will be that. No hassle, stress or wet carpets. Honestly- it's the way to go. Potty training in 5 minutes!

I'm glad you started this thread OP. was just wondering the same thing as ds has just turned two. He has been in and out paddling pool this week nappy less and weeing freely.

With my older one I left it til he was nearly 3 so it was quick and easy. Not sure I would do it on holiday, it's supposed to be a break for all of you.

I was just thinking of starting a thread just like this. Dd turned two at the start of July as well. She is weeing and pooing on the toilet every bathtime and sometimes during a nappy change she will tell me she needs to go and she does.

Hoping for some good advice here. Also, any book recommendations. I like a set of instructions to follow! Smile

Sorry op, not trying to hijack. Perhaps we could both benefit from a book to walk us through it!

It would be worth seeing if he will sit on the potty bare bottomed, after meals and whenever he wants to. If that is met with resistance he isn't ready. You could leave him bare with the potty to hand and see whether he will sit himself on it when he needs a wee or poo. If he does this willingly and produces something fairly often, preferring to go to the potty rather than just doing it wherever he is and with no warning, I'd say you've got a good chance of success. It will demonstrate that he knows what to do and where to do it, and that he has control of his bladder and bowel.

You can do the potty sitting with DS wearing nappies in between, and it can go on for some months just to get him used to the whole process. If the training goes really well and he is clean and dry before the holiday, you need to remember that he will only be able to use the potty in the aircraft toilet, and that they are not always vacant at short notice for a toddler. You will need to use some form of training pants I think. You might have to take him while you can whether he says he needs to or not.

Thanks for all the advice. I think it is probably best that I leave the potty training until we are back from holiday, unless he says he does not want to wear a nappy.
I feel slightly under pressure to get him trainned as my mum keeps telling me, that me and all of my siblings were dry by 18 months. My reply to her is that I don't want to rush him and that nappies are different this days, as they are disposable.

CSimms, are you me? My mum says ye exact same thing. In fact all older members of my family seem to see it as some sort of failing on my part that I haven't started potty training dd yet. I would just rather it was a quick process when she is ready, rather than months of accidents and tension.

Fortunately for me it is just my mum that is pushing me. The other day she said that we were being lazy not training him. I just reply to her, that there is not rush these days to get toddlers dry and he will do it when he is ready. She also wants me to get him dry before he starts nursery two mornings a week in Sept. This is not possible as he is going to start the week after we get back from our hols. The nursery will change him if necessary as long as I supply the nappies etc. and when we do start the training they will help and give us advice.
I am learning to listen and bite my tongue :-)

Yeah I wouldn't rush into it before your holiday either. Just let him get settled at nursery and then maybe you can do it with their help.

We're expecting dc2 in December so I think it might be best for us to start training dd relatively soon as have heard some toddlers relapse if they are potty trained too close to the birth of a sibling. She will also be moving into a new bedroom and potentially a big girl bed (although that is something else I don't want to rush!) so don't want too much change too quickly.

But for you op, I would go and enjoy a holiday with the 'convenience' of nappies and start the training in September. Where are you off to on hol?

We are going to Barbados for 2 weeks. I am hoping the 8 hour flight will be ok with DS. We went last year, but as he was only a year he was on my lap all of the way and he slept most of the journey.

Sounds lovely. Lots of little toys and snacks, snacks, snacks! Have a great time and all the best for potty training!
