So where is it acceptable to use a potty?

Having just read a thread where a mum was flamed for letting dc use a potty in tescos, I was just wondering where people thought it was acceptable to use one and not.

Today I let dd use potty in the park (in a quiet corner, then I tipped it out in a bush) and I yesterday sat her on it whilst on a walk. I know many people. Say you should just stay indoors whilst potty training but it's so sunny I don't want to. So, what do you think is ok and what isn't?
Thanks for feedback.

Ds is 2 weeks into potty training and I think trying to be discrete in the key.

We went to the beach for the day yesterday and had the potty with us in a corner of where we had set everything up. If we have parked somewhere without a toilet then putting the potty at the side or front of the car (whichever is more discrete) is fine IMO

In the middle of a shop or anything is wrong, especially if that place has a toilet.

When I was pregnant I went to a small baby shop and the owner's daughter got her potty out and did a poo in the middle of the shop. At that time I used to vomit every time I did a poo, let alone anyone else but I had to hold myself together because I didn't want to give the little girl a complex about potty training. I was horrible!!!!!

So not in a small enclosed space with other people around please!!

I think anywhere out of doors is acceptable for a small child to use a potty, because there isn't the issue of smell unless you are on a very crowded beach or something. But I used to use the pushchair as a partial shield if there wasn't anything else. It would be unkind if people close by were eating to have your child on the potty right next to them.

I wouldn't put DS on the potty in someone's lounge either, unless I knew for certain they didn't mind.

I think anywhere you would change a nappy maybe?

I think the key thing is in the early stages make sure they go before you go out and while you are put. Be careful of juice consumption if they are big drinkers (mine would drink pints if I didnt watch her) and offer water frequently instead.

Use bribes to make them go when you are near one. Tbh though I think people on here are not very understanding at times and there are situations I think where it is better than child having an accident (although whipping out in Tescos regularly is a bit much I guess...)

The people who suggest you shouldnt go out until you have time to mosey to the toilet, having found it and waited in a queue are bonkers I think.

That said with dd1 I never had to use it apart from outside.

The park (away from others), car park/layby, beach or any other outside space (softplay at a push if the toilets are full). Not in someone's living room (unless they also have a potty training toddler) and not in a shop/restaurant.
