Potty training - getting prepared!

DD is 2yr 4 months. I don't think she is quite ready yet but is getting there and I want to be prepared when the time is right. I am sure this has been asked on here time and time before, so I apologise for my laziness .... in my defence I have 7 week old twins and time and energy is not readily available in fact barely functioning

Can you lovely mn'ers please help...

  1. recommend a good book for me to read / plan to follow?
  2. Equipment needed - DD has a lovely pink potty already that she has decorated in Peppa Pig stickers - but wondering about one of thse seat things that fits on a toilet, and 'travel' potties
  3. Pull-ups - useful or a distraction?
  4. Any pearls of wisdom you can pass my way re being able to tell when DD is 'ready' and what can help to make it successful and a pleasant experience?
  5. Finally, what about night times? Is it usual to use nappies for longer at night, or once they are gone they are gone?

We already have a potty story book (the princess one), the potty is around for her to get used to it, she watches me and DH go to the loo and we talk about wee and poo a lot and the fact that one day soon she wont need nappies but will use a potty or toilet 'like a big girl'. Having two newborns in the house has further increased her interest in wee and poo - she is clearly dissapointed when I change the boys' nappies and there is only wee and no poo!

Thanks in advance and apologies again for using you all as a shortcut to greater knowledge!! Like using someone else essay/revision notes!

Hey bigboobgs, I've just posted in our twins thread, but saw this and thought I should probably answer your questions a bit more specifically.

  1. didn't bother, just read random stuff off the net!
  2. We had a potty for downstairs and a potty for upstairs and a toilet seat plus stool for bathroom (meant you had something quickly available in each room)
  3. Distraction Grin
  4. When she starts telling you she's doing a wee/poo or if you have her naked form the waist down so she can start seeing herself go and then start directing her to the potty. When she's able to tell you she needs a pee or poo and is able to wait.
  5. Nighttimes happen, normally, after daytimes are cracked, but I think the time between the two varies a lot. DD still happily pees in her nappy at night, but always asks to go to the loo if she needs a poo.
