In a moment of probable madness this week, I'm considering potty training, or familiarising in preparation for potty training my 16 month DS.

He absolutely loathes nappies, tries to pull them off, screams and thrashes when being changed and on the positive side is very predictable with his poos. He's quite good at signing (thank you, please, milk, good), so figured I might be able to teach him "toilet" as well. and he's recently started saying a few words too.

But, I have no idea what potties, or loo seats, or steps I should get (and anything else I might need).

Could anyone please give me some pointers or reccommendations?

16 months is quite young I think many people wait between 2 and 3 years old, or a bit older. Potty is good, we bought a potty with a lid that looks a bit like a mini loo. We've never had specific loo seats, but we do have a step in the bathroom for the loo when they were younger. Lots and lots of pants and trousers.

Just a simple potty you don't need anything fancy.
I found books helpful e.g Pirate Pete and his Potty and ELC do a soft book about going from nappies to toilet, complete with a picture of a turd Grin

16 months is v young though.

Very young, but he could be ready-wish mine started that young.
A potty one with his fav cartoon character on, plenty of pants, socks & joggers.
When he starts getting really into it, purchase a childs loo seat insert and a step stool.
Be prepared to stay indoors for a week as it normally takes a week for them to stop having accidents-if they are ready and if you find he isn't ready try again every few months Smile

Grin turd pictures? excellent!

i know it's quite young, but was talking with my mum and some of her friends recently and they all potty trained their babies around that age, which made me Shock, but then i thought well it might be worth a try. if it's a total poo covered, urine stained failure, then i can always try again next summer! [wry smile]

thank you both

Not sure how old you/ your mum/ friends are but from what i have heard in the past people used to potty train earlier than now- there was more incentive when you were having to wash and dry terry nappies and tumble driers were few and far between

Go for it, cheap potties are fine, and it means you can invest in a couple to avoid mad dashes up the stairs. With both of mine I started around this stage with a no pressure approach... let them play with the potty, put teddy on and gently suggest they have a try at nappy change time. Praise for sitting on the potty, huge praise for actually doing anything Smile. Makes actual training less daunting for both of you.

It is also good to just keep future potty training in mind when clothes shopping... if you think you might do it soon go for easily removable clothing!

. Pound land potty x 3 (upstairs, downstairs and car/buggy)
. Towels or absorbent under sheets for car seat.
. LOTS of pants and quick drying bottoms ie combats or leggings rather than jeans.
. Story book with a potty in.
. A song and dance made up that you do with shit loads lots of enthusiasm when they get it right Grin

Our nursery recommend jelly shoes / crocs as a spare, so they can just be rinsed and dried and they are good to wear again. Genius!
