DD is 2.2 and I suspect she may be ready for potty training. I've done part-time EC with her since she was 5 months old, but haven't done any serious training as such and she has always been in nappies at nursery (never found one that supports EC, not that I would expect to!). She went through a phase where she didn't want to use the potty at home but was happy to use a training seat on the loo.
I suspect she might be ready for 'training' because:

  • she is pretty much completely reliable with poos, says 'need the loo' before each poo when at home, never poos at nursery, and can hold out for a few minutes if there isn't a loo in the vicinity.
  • she is taking a real interest in the potty and the loo, is fascinated by flushing and will often say 'I want to pee in the potty' or 'I want to pee on the loo'
However, on the other hand:
  • she doesn't say anything at nursery
  • she does occasionally insist she has a dry nappy when she doesn't
  • she has some days where she'll tell me every time she needs the potty, and some where she never does and I'm 'catching' rather than her leading the way.
Nursery don't really support potty training until they're two and a half, although apparently if the parents request it and they think the child is ready, they can use potties from 2 onwards. As a result I want to be sure that DD is ready and I'm not confusing things. Is it worth my biting the bullet and going ahead with training anyway, or am I better leaving it until she insists? I don't want to force anything, but don't want to leave it until she's lost all interest either! Any ideas?

I'g give it a go over the weekend when you're home. From what you say she has all the signs but you'll know if after 2 days there is no progress. My DD was 1.11 when I first tried and at the end of day one it was obvious she had no control (and I was heavily pregnant) so did it again at 2.5 and we were done within the day, she had 2 accidents, first few days at nursery a poo in pants a she was 'busy' and then we never looked back. Is she in a room at nursery with others being potty trained?? this will help. If at first you don't succeed then try again in a month or so. Good luck

Thanks raspberry. I found out from the nursery that she actually has been asking to go there - "I need a pee!" but her key carer has been telling her to go in her nappy, which must be confusing the issue Hmm. She's apparently fascinated by the older ones using the potty so, knowing that, I really want to give it a go. It also explains why she gets really insistent that she doesn't need the potty when she gets home from nursery.

I'll have to talk to nursery about whether they are prepared to relax the rule on having to be 2.5 or over though - it seems very rigid and I'm really surprised about the 'just pee in your nappy then' when I would have thought they'd be happier to see she was obviously interested in potty training!
Now to find a weekend where we'll be at home the whole time...

Seems very strange not to be taking her when she asks, have to say nursery had been putting my DS on the potty since he was 2 at nappy changing time...before I even got my head round potty training. They are very supportive, obviously I'm very lucky as seen other posters with nursery saying the same thing.
Fingers crossed for you
