Potty training questions!

Hi folks, my DS has just turned 3, I know this might be quite late to potty train, but I didn't want to start before he was ready. Started today, relatively successful so far (2 big wees in potty, 4 wee dribbles, 3 accidents - 2 of those in garden though, hurray for good weather!!)

Have so many 'silly' questions though as this is all new to me, hoping some of you more experienced mums can share your wisdom. Was wondering:

  1. Do boys need wiped after a pee? (Haven't so far, his jumping up and down with excitement after a success shook any drops off!)
  2. When should I teach him to pee standing up? (Partly asking this as his two successful wees both squirted out over front of potty - I had to hold his willy pointing downward!)
  3. How and when should I introduce the transfer from potty to toilet?
  4. How (and at what age) do you teach them to wipe after a poo?
  5. Now that I've started can I ever put him in nappies again? (We are planning a family trip out for Jubilee on Mon, public park, no toilets handy, walking so can't have potty in car boot, would nappies for the day be very bad?)
Sorry such a long post, crazy how many questions pee and poo can create!! Thanks!

  1. I try and encourage but my DS1 and DS2 are often far too busy to wipe willy!
  1. DS1 did not start this consistently till he started school (Daddy taught him!) but DS2 started much quicker and is a useful skill to teach for going behind a tree!
  1. As soon as possible - we have a wonderful two in one toilet seat that looks like a normal toilet seat but has a magic little seat that folds down. No faffing about with plastic seats in the bathroom!
  1. Must do soon as DS1 is nearly 6! I am sure it will sort itself out in the end!
  1. We have a wonderful potette. It comes in its own bag, folds down fairly flat, you get quite quick at opening it, can be used as a toilet seat in public toilets or at friends, all wee and poo is easy to dispose in plastic bag, best thing we ever bought. We went to see the olympic torch and DS2 needed a poo so off we went behind a bush without queuing with the other 30,000 people! You can also get little pads that go inside their pants and special covers for car seats and pushchairs.

Toilet training is a joy! I have only DS3 to go now - currently obsessed with using toilet but is not yet 2 and although sits on has not performed.

Hi

I started potty training my DS last week, so far it's going well! In response to your questions:

  1. I have tried to wipe after a wee but he is normally a bit excited as well, so sometimes I do and sometimes he's come to me asking for a wipe!
  1. I'm not going to try and teach the peeing standing up, will leave that to the expert. Did attempt to this afternoon in a park and it just went all over his trousers.
  1. I've already introduced the toilet as "mummy's potty" and he will go on it from time to time if we're upstairs. I think he likes it better because he can look at his willy when he's weeing and it doesn't squirt all over the top of the potty. He doesn't like the trainer seat on it though, so I need to hold him whilst he's on there (good for the upper arms!)
  1. I've just been wiping after a poo, far too early yet, although with him asking for a wipe occasionally after a poo we may get there.
  1. Second Lorisparkle with the potette, they cost about £15, plus £3 for about 10 liners - bit of a bugger to work out how to push the stands in, but it's been used 3 times today (outside a shop, park car park and inside the park!) At first he didn't seem too keen last weekend, but now he seems fine with it.

He's been in nappies for naps and bedtime, but is really kicking off about putting them on and keeps trying to tell us he goes on the potty for a wee wee! Apart from a small incident last weekend he has been an absolute star with it all and to be honest I didn't expect him to take to it so quickly.

Good Luck Smile

Hey, thanks for the advice! Just an update, the Jubilee celebration day went off well without a flood alert needing to be issued. Ended up just taking his regular potty with me (had pram with me for DD, so could stuff it below her) and with some judicious management of juice quantities managed to get away with only one comfort stop. Mind you, did have 3 complete changes of clothes with me, really must be more optimistic!!
