DS standing up to pee....

DS is 19 months old and we recently bought a potty just so he could get used to it - we were not really planning on doing any real potty training for quite some time as he'd not shown any signs that he was ready.

He was very keen on sitting on it as soon as showed it to him and getting a piece of toilet tissue and wiping himself - just play acting really. Lately though he has started peeing in the potty before he has his bath and sometimes first thing in the morning but always standing up over the potty.

I didn't really think this was a problem but I have been advised that if I don't get him to pee sitting down he will never poo sitting down and that I should concentrate on getting him to sit down and pee. If I ask him to sit down he says,"no" and gets upset if I try to move him down. My feelings are we are not really potty training yet and that I can deal with getting him to sit down when we start potty training for real (I was thinking of waiting until he was 2 at least). I don't want to discourage him from using it. But is letting him pee standing up going to cause problems later on? Thanks.

When we started potty training ds refused to sit down to poo, he had got used to standing up and pooing in nappy. He was a little resistant at first, so just had to catch them from behind, after a week we managed to move him more into a sitting position. The thing is that at 19 months it might be the start of being dry, or it might be a fun phase for a month or two and then completely refused. Making an issue of it is more likely to put him off. People saying that he will never poo sitting down are being a bit alarmist probably jealous that he is so little and already trying can you honestly picture your ds as a 15yr old standing up to poo, or on his wedding day, of course not, even by the time he is 2 1/2 you can be pointing out that even daddy sits down for a poo, and he will want to copy him. Keep going as you are and try not to worry too much.

Thanks for the post. I think that's how I was feeling so good to have it confirmed!
