Thats it really, How did you do it? I am torn between the cold turkey straight into pants and clean the capets daily trainig, and the using pullups and regular visits to the potty to catch something training? What did you do, how did you do it, did it work, can someone come and do it for me??

Cold turkey quickest. Took dd1 about 4 months in pull-ups + pants mixed. Dd2 was dry in 2 days cold turkey, ds has been a bit more variable, but is dry most days (think is day 11 now). Trying him at night too now (fingers crossed). For 5 nights his nappy was dry in the morning, but last night he had wet nappy, in fact wet even before bed. He was then wet in the morning when I changed him into pants. I know he can go through night, but when he sometimes has nappy he gets confused/lazy when it comes off. Have waterproof under sheet and another set of sheet/waterproof in case he is wet and a new tumble dryer, so all set!

You can start slowly by just having some nappy free time each day, esp good outside in the warmer weather, so you and they get used to it, and you might catch some which obviously you praise as if was the best thing ever.

I haven't bothered with pull ups for second two, as they are more expensive and harder for them to distinguish between pull-ups and pants, so makes them more confused about when they can and can't wee in them. I can see that they might have a place e.g. At school/nursery so child can go themselves with less assistance, but I don't think that they help with potty training, and sooner or later you have to make the transition anyway.

Oh last tip, make sure that not only do you have lots of pants (10 is ideal); but also loads of trousers/ socks if you start now and it's a boy, we are short on socks, so having superfast turnaround on them! Girls with just dresses on make bigger puddles, as with a boy by the time it gets to floor level it has soaked into pants, trousers and socks, not too much left!

Somewhere on MN there is a guide to Potty Training Bootcamp. Worked well for us.

eggtimer · 10/04/2012 21:25

We have done bootcamp for past week with DTs (2 1/2 year old boys).
No accidents at all on day 3, 4, 5.
2 accidents today (lots of distractions).

Was fine.

He is a boy, we have lots of pants but had not thought of sicks, trip to tesco for us tomorrow then! I will have a look for the boot camp.

If your child does attend a nursery i suggest that you bring in lots of pants and not to bother with pull ups (unless you are doing the pull up thing at home) as it will be very confusing for them and the nursery will have definitely be use to potty training kiddly winks. (children)

Cold Turkey with nappy only for night time.

On day 11 now and he doing brilliantly. Prepare to have a few days of hell with carpet cleaner to the ready and lots of bottom half clothes including socks! I was almost in tears and nearly gave up by lunchtime on the 3rd day but stuck with it and by the evening he was keen to use potty/loo.

The 4th day I stopped asking if he wanted to go but just put him on loo/potty every hour or so and he remained dry. Next day he started asking to go or telling me needing to go, including the dreaded 'no.2'

Now he asking to go and thinks a No2 splashing in the loo is hilarious.

Reward/bribe as you see fit. Stickers on reward chart work well with our lad as well as a congratulatory small sweet treat for having poo! Also giving big cheers and jump excitedly up and down, and telling how proud you are also helps.

Good luck and stock up on washing powder!

He starts playgroup in a couple of weeks, so I will ask then what they do. I have found the bootcamp, and bookmarked it. Will also stock up on the kitchen towel, and disinfectant spray!

Some nurseries can't be bothered request pull-ups. But I agree, pants all the way where possible, even in the car etc.

Cherryhd · 10/04/2012 21:41

Yes cover sofa for first few days, blanket, towels anything that washes and drys easily. First trip downstairs in pants, sat on sofa then had a wee all in 15mins - soooo happy it was covered (son wee'd not me!) Honestly first few days are tough but it has been worth it.

Calamityboo · 10/04/2012 22:00

Glad you clarified that cherry Grin I will get covers sorted!

cold turkey since friday... minor leak tues as daddy forgot to tell her she could get up from naughty spot for a wee wee if she needed to (in the whole 60secs she was there!!) and one accident today due to the distraction of plaing with her cousins... has pull ups for nap time and bed time but nap time pull up was dry today so hopefully they'll be gone over the weekend too... 1st day at nursery in knickers tomorrow - bag packed with about 20 pairs of knickers (slight exaggeration), trousers and socks that hopefully won't be needed but any more than 2 accidents and they're doin summat wrong!! lol... am kidding, they all react differently in different environments with distractions etc ;-) Power thru... U will get there in the end ;-)
