Have just started potty training ds 2.6yrs. Since yesterday lunchtime we have all poos and most wees, except for when dh had put him in he had been wearing a nappy, and the first two times afterwards he forgot. He has been going about every 20mins, so overall I think he is doing well.

Dh is proposing overnight trip to FIL on Sat. I think will need nappy for car journey as is 1.5hrs on motorway. Beyond that looking for strategies to deal with it. There is a potty we have left there, but not same as usual one.

FIL I imagine will have no recollection of his own children being potty trained his children were saints in all respects; he will have hysteronics if there are accidents, he has carpets - we have hard floors. Do I take nappies in case goes pear shaped? What do you recommend for carpets, am guessing flash will annoy his nose and ruin the carpet.

I would put him in pull ups. Not fair on FIL, or your DS if FIL goes off the deep end.

Can you not stay at home for a couple of weeks until he is a bit more in the swing?

Dh determined to go due to easter, but this is my only window to attempt it until either half term or the summer due to having the school run and afterschool activities etc. He seems generally ready but a bit fed up with the constant wees (the girls could both go for hours at this age/stage).

Am worried that pull ups will confuse, went that way with dd1 and took months. In nappies he used to tell me about a third of the time, but since going cold turkey he hasn't told us dh at all when he has been in a nappy. What about those pant liners for potty training has anyone tried them?

my mum suggested putting a pair of pants on and then a pull up over the top. that way he is in big boy pants and will feel as soon as he wets them & want to change but won't leak all over the carpets..might suffice just for the weekend?

otherwise cold turkey is probably the best way and just ignore FILs grumbling! (take some carpet cleaner with you maybe!)

You could put one of those incontinence night pads/maternity pads down on the car seat if you want to try it without a nappy..they should absorb and enough and you could stop once half way...

If you've only just started you have a few more days before Easter, you might find he dramatically improves in that time..

We spent 8 hours on Sunday with aged relatives and DD (on day 10 of potty training) spent the day in a pull up. The relatives see a lot of their own GC and so know all about potty training & when I said that we were doing it were told their house was a "nappy zone". It didn't seem to phase DD at all. Whilst we were there, she still told us if she wanted a wee & we took her to the loo & then put the pull up back on. The next day she was back to peeing & pooing in her potty just as before. I'd been really worried about the effect it was going to have on her but she seemed completely unbothered.

Having had a poo disaster at a friend's house last week (luckily on one of the really sunny days so we were in the garden), DD may be in pull ups more often at other people's houses.

He is doing well, has 2-3 accidents, mainly when tired,or we don't get there fast enough, but he is increasingly asking us rather than being prompted. He is still asking for nappies on though just as he asks for mummy milk daily despite being weaned for a few months we have decided to go with the 'dry like me' pads in his regular pants. Hopefully they will catch the bulk of any accidents while keeping on with the theme of pants in the day. Will probably put night time nappy on slightly early. Dh doesn't want to go back now, or show chink our resolve, will just keep close eye on him. Another two days to go anyway.

Well half way through visit, and so far all is well! He only had one accident today and that was at home before we left when I had popped out so dh dealt with it :o . He was nappy free in the car, but we did strategically stop half way and sit him on the potty although he hadn't asked for it. He was fine at the restaurant, insisted on dh taking him to the mens loos :o but he didn't like the idea of urinals, which dh was quite pleased about when he realised it was more than just a wee. He was dry during his nap in the car and has been fine all evening.

If his nappy is dry in the morning I might even try no nappy tomorrow night at home Can't remember now the rule of thumb for when to take away nighttime nappy. He's been dry for two/three mornings now, so I think he has nearly cracked it. Lets just hope he manages at church tomorrow!
