Technical question regarding bribes

About to go cold turkey with DS, 2.6, at the Easter weekend. I don't normally use bribes in other areas, but am willing to give anything a try when it comes to potty training!

So, do I show him the desired object (eg chocolate) first, saying "DS, all this will be yours if you do a wee in the potty" and then put it up on a high shelf waiting for that miraculous day, or do I spring the surprise on him only once he's done the deed, as an incentive to keep going?

Which would be more effective, in your experience? DS is one who has never, ever, done anything in the potty, despite it being part of the furniture for over a year.

Many thanks !

2.6 might be kinda early to go cold turkey, my ds was that age when I did it and it took forever as he wasn't actually ready, however..... He did love his rewards chart more than the direct bribes, a road drawn on a big bit of paper with pictures of things he wanted, books, toys the park etc and when enough stickers had been got to fill each bit of road he or to have each treat. Still gets a chocolate time every time he has clean pants now though 9 months on as he still isn't 100% clean!

Thanks for your reply, killergerbil! Hmmm, he starts school in September and has to be out of nappies by then... (in France)... And I'm starting to panic. I'm surrounded by friends with DDs his age who just did it in one weekend, grrrrrr!
Good idea about the reward chart - will give it a go, too.

I really wouldnt go cold turkey if he has never done anything in a potty. September is ages away I would first concentrate on bribing him to produce at both ends.
