Potty training cold Turkey - how long did it take?

Curious to find out, for those who have gone cold turkey with potty training (during the day only), how long did it take before you could safely and with confidence say they had got it?

I am over 2 weeks in with just over 50% success rate now. I have learnt its all about the timing. She can hold it if I get her to a potty or toilet in time. She is 21 months btw.

I don't know! We are day 6 with DS and he is about 50% of the time too. He's 3.5 though! Not even attempted poo yet. He seems to save that for his pull up at night but if I can get him to wee I will tackle the poo later.

I think 2 weeks in you just need to keep going. We're not going back now either. It is hard and I long for the day he just goes himself but we have had massive issues.

Good luck.

I started yesterday morning we had three accidents but after that she goes on her potty and i don't have to ask her she did a poo yesterday to and we make a big deal of emptying pot and flushing chain, today fab no accidents and taking herself to wee and shouting look look clever girl. All i can say is maybe there not ready yet? Sorry cant be of more help. Dd is 2.3

i started 2 weeks ago with ds2 (he will be 3 at the end of may). he is going most days without wetting his underwear. and when he does wet it is usually forst thing in the morning when he wakes up and is still sleepy.

i have to say though that although we went 'cold turkey' i am sort of following the BFing idea of never offer never refuse WRT pull ups. most days he wakes up and doesn't even think about pull ups and i never offer but sometimes during the day or going to bed he will ask for one and i dont refuse. i want this to be totally at his pace and for us it is working. i messed up with ds1 by pushing too soon and too fast, it ended up taking 6 months and he had toilet issues for a long time after. with ds2 i just want him to be comfortable with what is happening and i expect him to regress a bit before he gets it totally. i am fine with that.

One week and 100% success then 3 weeks later the nappies came off at night. This was 2 years ago and have only had 2/3 accidents in all that time. I followed a book, worked amazingly well but not sure the author is all that welcome on mn!!

gregssausageroll · 18/03/2012 09:00

Good day yesterday, no accidents!

Iamweasel · 18/03/2012 09:09

We're one week in today. DS is 2.9

It's been fairly successful but I think it's down to our vigilance. Putting him on the potty often. He has said he needs the potty a few times but not everytime

Yesterday we had one accident. And once he did a few drops before shouting fir the potty and letting the rest out

I think it's a marathon not a sprint

How do you all clean and sanatise potty as my lo goes so often whats the quickest and most hygienic way? I use detol spray and tissue at the mo! Any better ways???? We had our first day at the allotment yesterday and had 2 accidents as she was preoccupied I think, today has been fine tho!

nichan · 19/03/2012 21:37

We where quite lucky our dd got it in three days after many accidents. Sticker charts are fantastic for potty training btw :)

LizziePizzie · 26/03/2012 10:04

Update - we have had 2 dry days (And nights amazingly) and that was 3 1/2 weeks. I am so proud of her!

Chirpychick - I just rinse the potty in the sink/shower for wee, and spray and rinse for poo. If I am out then toilet paper to wipe it dry and i'll spray and rinse when I get home.

We are on day three and it is agony for us all! DS is 3 (last month), and is due to start pre-school in a couple of weeks.

So far we've had a wee accident each day, and numerous poo in pants. He has managed two poos on the toilet (refused to use the potty), but I think that was more by chance than anything else. He does tell us that he needs to go, but then nothing happens. I suspect he is just after stickers for sitting on the toilet, because all three wee accidents have been within minutes of having been to the toilet without success.

If anyone has any advice, I'd gladly hear it! :(

We haven't used any incentives (that was my back up plan). Have been potty training since a week last saturday. His last accident was yesterday morning but I have had to remind him a bit. I would say it's about 80 percent self initiated. He is dry at night now too, so hoping he is there, though he still yearns for his nappies!

They can't insist at preschool that he is potty trained, in the UK, it is discriminatory. If he isn't ready he isn't ready, just like none of mine walked before 15months, they weren't ready. Maybe as you have started with rewards you need to up the ante, so he gets one if he sits on it and two if he does a wee etc, or a raisin/smartie only if he produces if you want to go down food reward route. I would give it a week or so but if he hasn't cracked it then maybe go back to nappies while he settles at preschool and try again at half term. My personal, unresearched view, is that when they are really ready you don't need incentives, doing it is its own reward.

Can I ask what everyone does when out and about please? My DD has been doing all poos on the potty or toilet for months (she's 21 months now) but wees are a completely different story. One day she's dry all day, the next she's gone through 5 pairs of knickers before 10am! I have tried cold turkey a few times to go to the shops etc and she has stayed dry no apparent problems but I'm scared to do it for longer than a couple of hours as I often don't know if I'll be near a toilet. Do you really have to carry a potty everywhere with you? Is that how it works?

QueenSconetta · 14/04/2012 18:27

I have been carrying a potty around in a bag, and a loo roll! DD's not used it so far but have never been too far from a toilet. I guess increase the time gradually?
