Am I delusional to think that we might manage potty training without a potty?

I have twin boys who are nearly 2. I know it's pretty early to think about potty training, but they both love to sit on the loo and wee, and then flush and say "bye wee!". I frequently ask them during the day if they want to go to the loo, and every time they say "yes", they do go.

I am not intending to make a concerted potty training effort just yet as we're going on holiday in a few weeks' time, but my question is whether we can get by without a potty. We have a little step by the loo, the boys need a little help to get on the loo, but are perfectly happy to sit there and wee.

Part of me thinks that getting a potty might actually be a step backwards, since they are already using the loo....Haven't even begun to think about getting them to poo on the loo yet, but they are creatures of habit, so we'd probably know when to start!

So what do you think? Have you successfully potty trained straight to toilet?!

I did with dc's - both had pretty strong bladders and could easily hold it in until they got upstairs.

If they're already standing to use the toilet I'd stick with that tbh.

I have never owned a potty. To my knowledge, neither of my children ever sat on a potty. I didn't see the point.

If they can't hold it until they reach a loo they're not ready IMO.

'Potty training' is a misnomer really - don't feel you have to have one at all if they are already happy with the loo. We mean toileting training really.... Sounds like you might be one of the lucky ones for whom it is fairly straightforward! I know lots of children who never did pottys.

I never owned a potty.

Never had one for any of my children. Seems a bit of a faff. I did have one in the boot of the car for emergencies but was only ever used once (by me....I was desperate on a day out and heavily pregnant!)

No, you don't need a potty. The term "potty training" just means "toilet training". My DC didn't use a potty either, I just couldn't stand the thought of having them doing a poo in the living room and then me having to carry it upstairs to flush it away, when we had a perfectly good toilet for that purpose!

Sounds like you are on the right track with your boys, keep up the good work!

My DS never really bothered with the potty as he preferred to use the loo. He even used to stand up to wee into the travel potty when we were out and about. DD on the other hand was petrified of the loo for ages so used her own potty with a seat and lid even after she had got over her fear of toilets. You just go with what your DCs prefer I suppose.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 29/02/2012 22:44

Just remembered that with DS we ended up not bothering to take the travel potty out and just let him do it straight into the absorbent bags.

Sparklingbrook · 29/02/2012 22:46

No potties here either. Just a step and a child's loo seat.

Good luck

DD1(3) has been "potty trained" for 6m & refuses to use the loo. Don't go there!

We've just started potty training in the last 2 days - we have a loo seat that is attached to steps and handles so my DD can climb up herself and feel safe on the toilet.
I wanted to skip the potty stage too so great to hear that others have done this successfully.
